802.11a/b/g help!!

#1 Post by mtbiac » Wed Aug 11, 2004 5:26 pm

For those of you that have a WORKING 802.11a/b/g setup, could you please let me know which version of the driver you are using? No matter which driver I install, when I activate and use the wireless my connection is MUUUCH slower than when wired, 20kb/s vs 220kb/s doing the SAME exact speed tests. The wireless also causes my sound to skip and my mouse to skip. when I use wired, all of these problems dissapear

thanks for your hhelp

Try selecting a specific base station rather than "best found". I think that with a weak signal it keeps trying to rescan.

already did that. Forgot to mention that I hvae "EXCELLENT" signal strength and am connected at 11mbs (its a B linkysis wireless router). I was htinking maybe I need to update wireless router firmware, but all the other wireless computers in my house work FINE with it. WTF?

This problem comes up time after time.

There is a conflict with the Intel Zero Configuration and IBM Access Connections.

Remove the Access Connections software.

don't have access connectoins installed

what now? I've tried channels 10 and 2 with same problem, any others that work particularly well? We also have many wireless/cell phones in my house but i doubt that's the problem since the other wireless computers are working fine.

thanks

How come your wired connection is so slow? 1.7Mb/sec (220kBps - I hope it's not 220kbps!) is SLOW - I routinely get 50Mb/second for my 10/100 (100Mbps) network. My a/b/g/card works just fine - 4-5Mbps on "B" (factory image wireless driver from February this year).

I was testing my internet connection, not network.

I just finished upgrading firmware on the router and switched the channel to 6. I get 160/150 now in the connectoin test, but the webpages load almost instantly so its gotta be faster than that. The servers were busy so that may be why. and yes i know i should test solely network connectoin speed but I'm not too sure how to do this.

thanks

Use a wired connection from your laptop and notebook to the router (ignore the wireless functionality). copy a large file from one to the other and time it. Don't forget to multiply the file size by 8 to calculate Mbps (they are listed as MB on the computer).

laptop and notebook? typo? I only have the T42p but I could probably borrow my mother's desktop which is WIRED to the router.

something is VERY wrong. Windows was saying it would take 218min to transfer a 419mb file to a desktop that was wired, from the wireless on t42p. I let it run for a minute and it went down to 217min then I canceled.

On the Wired t42p to wired desktop, the 419mb transfer was only going to take 9minutes

PLEASE HELP!! I dont know what else to do!

I thought I read on a previous post that you had a desktop also. Whatever, your wired speed is 6Mbps and your wireless speed is 0.25Mbps. The wired speed is OK for a 10-base network but as you're most likely running a 10/100 network, it sounds like there's a problem somewhere. Similarly, your wireless has a problem. Interestingly, both are running about 1/10 the speed they should be (?). You need a network setup expert and that's not me :(

This could be causing you sound problems, too.

Good luck.

Confirm your internet connection speed:

http://www.dslreports.com/tools

You could have a bad networking card (although I believe the eireless and wired are totally separate). You may have a hardware problem. It sounds like a software problem but you shouldn't be having these problems. Refresh my memory, do you have cable or DSL? Is there any special logon sequence or initialization? Post your ISP download speed from DSLreports. Maybe it's time to call big blue

hehe yeah i've been using DSL reports the whole time to test my connectoin. Just tested it with the wireiess and I'm getting 19kB/s download and even lower upload. I have 2mbit/230kb cable modem, no special sequence. Its hooked into a linksysi wireless router.

I guess i'll have to call IBM unless you guys have any more suggestions?

thanks

Just got off the phone with IBM and I have to send the laptop in for repair. He said its not common that the wireless cards break, and that I had tried EVERYTHING possible to get it working.

he said I'd have it back in 3-7 days. hope he's right because I am leaving next thursday morning for college :(
