Can I transfer Win XP from another box?

#1 Post by hbrednek » Tue Jul 11, 2006 9:03 pm

I have a T23 with a now dead hard drive. That will be replaced soon. When it is replaced, I need to put some Microsoft OS on a partition. It doesn't much matter which one, but I have a disk for Windows XP and another computer (a big Intellistation) which has a Windows XP CoA on it, but which isn't running Windows XP (it's running Open BSD).

Can I use the Win XP CoA from the Intellistation on the T23? If not, any advice on what the cheapest Microsoft OS would be would be most welcome. The only need for a Microsoft OS is to run a demo of a program one time. The majority of the time the T23 will be running Linux, probably Kubuntu.

In terms of the EULA, no. An OEM licence is for one machine only and is not transferable.

Generally the cheapest retail XP Licences are the accademic versions. I doin't know what its like in North America, but here they don't seem to care whether you are a genuine student or not.

The retail EULA for XP means the licence is transferable to a subsequent computer.

Cheers,

If you only need Windows temporarily, you could install Windows, and just not activate it. You'll have 30 days of using Windows. Disclaimer: This is not legal advice.
