Update Connector never finds any updates

#1 Post by synapse » Wed Aug 11, 2004 10:16 pm

Hi-

I have a T42p and Update Connector v6.1. Everytime I run it, it goes through everything fine (initializing it, telling me what info it needs to send, checking) but can never find any updates. If I go to IBM's site and manually search for multiple downloads, I can see many that I need (BIOS, EC, wireless card, video, bluetooth, modem, etc.). Am I doing something wrong here? It would be really nice not to have to check manually and compare versions. Thanks!

IBM does not know how to fix this

#2 Post by t41user » Thu Aug 12, 2004 3:03 am

I have reported the same problem to many people at IBM many times. Many people at IBM have told me that on some machines the update connector simply never works and that they do not know why. Many people on this forum report that the connector sometimes doesn't work because some IBM server is down, or some such thing. But IBM knows that on some T4x machines at least, the update connector simply never works - ever - regardless of any server status. This may be rationalization or adaptive preference formation, but I have come to find that I do not want many of the updates that IBM makes available and so I don't mind so much having a dysfunctional update connector. Maybe some of the people on this forum who seem to know more about IBMs than many people at IBM (and there really do seem to be a bunch of them) can figure what's going wrong here.

Update Connector has always been problematic - it works for some people, doesn't for most. The easiest way to update is to use the "Details about my system" tab in support and get a nice matrix of the drivers for your system. Download the ones you need and run software installer.

Update connector - i emailed tech support

#4 Post by Danny Manabat » Wed Sep 08, 2004 9:44 am

i wrote email and asked for tech support regarding the same problem about update connector not being able to connect to ibm server.

i got a prompt reply the following day. the response asked me to go to an ibm download site in order to update the ibm connector. after downloading i continued to install the software, but still no luck.

i agree. the update connector program does not work on my T40.

I have the same problem that

my update connector never finds any updates.

After I talked to IBM, the customer service told me to simply download the updates manually.

It hasn't been working for, not even once.

Tack another "no" onto the list. My update connector stinks. I tried to update it, and it crashed my computer! I had to mess with the computer for a few hours to get it back to normal. Every time I try to use UC, it always says the server is down. I don't know what is wrong, but oh well. I do it maually.

Count me in as one of the lucky few that it does work for. Just pulled down a couple of driver updates this morning. No glitches in the process at all.

reread my post - 2nd on the list

What's the point of polling or telling different stories here? Reread my post. IBM knows that update connector sometimes or always works on some machines and absolutely never works on other machines. What's the point of hearing different people say, 'It works for me' and 'It doesn't work for me'? If someone has a decent explanation of why there are some machines on which it never works and other machines on which it either always or sometimes works, that would be interesting.

I think that's kind of an over-reaction. We try to keep this a friendly forum. We don't want people to be afraid to post because they may be chastised. This is supposed to be a fun place to be, not work!!!

Sorry t41user,
I saw that you asked if you were doing anything wrong and I was just relating that I do the same thing you do and it works. My apologies for the extraneous post.

clarification

#11 Post by t41user » Thu Sep 09, 2004 3:07 pm

Sorry rideDPU (and anyone else) for any bad tone or nonconstructiveness in my last post. One thing that I have found annoying in the past and that motivated my last post is that sometimes when a question about update connector comes up, some users assure other users not to worry and suggest that they should simply keep trying to use it - as if the (seemingly only, universal, or default) explanation of a problem with using update connector is that the server is down, or some such temporary thing. For many people, so far as I know, the problem is not temporary and has nothing to do with an IBM server.

I've had problems with the UC and tech support has essentially told me that they are currently working on replacing it. Until then, they recommended that I go to the IBM website, type my model number into the search (2373ktu for me) and click on the first item that the search returns. That then took me to a page of info specific for my machine, including downloads (which you can pick from the Document type drop down box). He did not have any suggestions on how to discern whether my machine actually needed a specific download (some of them were dated 2003)... Once downloaded, run the executabled, then run the software installer to install. I'm a newb at this so if I'm off base somewhere, someone please correct me. good luck.

Set your default browser back to IE and UC will work. I found that in XP the best place to set this is in "Set Program Access and Defaults."

Good luck!
