Yes, it is possible. I have an R40, and frequently boot into LINUX which I keep on a USB Key. You have to activate USB in the BIOS for this to work.

Don't forget to set the USB hard drive as an active HDD in disk manager as well.

It is indeed my intention to boot to Linux also.
I have activated to boot from a USB device (pushing F1 to get into the bios), but at first sight, only USB floppy or CD-Rom can be booted from.

I have Creative Zen Micro (6GB) of which I configured 4GB as a USB removable USB disk device.

Maybe it's not possible to use this combination.

What is your USB device?

I boot LINUX (slax LIVE) from a SanDisk Cruzer USB flashkey on my R40. Starting with the system OFF, here's what I do:

(1) Plug in USB key and start-up and F1 into BIOS

(2) In the BOOT section of the BIOS, look at the HARD DRIVE section and you should see a plus sign (+) indicating several menu choices. Click to expand, and use F5 or F6 to move your usb key to the top of the list. (I know "hard drive" is not logical, but that's how the thinkpad bios works).

(3) Also in the BIOS, make sure you have USB "enabled". (I think it's in the CONFIG section, if I remember correctly).

(4) Save settings, and exit BIOS, and (hopefully) you should be able to boot from your usb key.
