installing desktop dvd/rw drive- slave/master

#1 Post by dsigma6 » Wed Jul 12, 2006 9:11 am

i've never installed a drive before, but that's self explanatory- i'm just not sure about the slave/master ide cable. ive read that it makes a minimal difference in speed whether the drive is slave or master.

also, i assume any connector coming off the power supply will do, doesn't seem like they're marked, or would even need to be marked for a particular purpose.

the cd drive is already hooked up to the master, so would adding the dvdrw on slave be ok?

Master/Slave

It shouldn't matter at all, although I always make the primary drive the master more 'cus I'm a little OCD. Many manufactureres like Dell use Cable Select and the Master/Slave thing is just based on which on is hooked up first.

If you're going to be using the drive for ripping (what else?), place the burner as either the master or slave drive on the SECOND IDE connecter of the MB.

Placing the drive on the same ID connecter as the primary HD will slow the system down measurably.

This is a very good idea. In fact, the boot drive must be the master drive on the primary channel.

well there are two ide cables with slave/master- one is on the hd with slave still open, and the other cable was going to a cd-rom with slave open...so that was the plan.

shouldn't these drives come with jumpers?

Yes, don't they?

Check the drive's documentation for location.

Unless the system is set for Cable Select or they're SATA connectors, in which case it doesn't matter.

thanks james. ive bought 5 things in the past 2 days from newegg, mostly OEM so the documentation/accessory factor is nonexistent.

all this time spent focusing on the thinkpads, ive neglected my poor old desktop..i think im gonna start tinkering with desktops since the thinkpads are running fine.
