problem with memory upgrade

#1 Post by madams9 » Wed Jul 12, 2006 9:14 am

I have
t40 - type 2379
BIOS -3.21 (release date of 6/12/2006)

My T40 came with 256 mb. I wanted to add 1 gig of memory. I picked up a Corsair Value Select stick (DDR333(PC2700), non-ecc, un-buffered). When I put the chip in the slot under the laptop the laptop won't boot. If I put the 1 gig chip in the slot under the keyboard I get 4 sets of 4 beeps than it sits there with nothing on the screen. I have tried using the 1 gig chip by itself with the same results. I tried the 256 and 1 gig in all combinations with the same results.

I called IBM support and they won't even think about helping because I didn't buy an IBM memory chip. I was told that only IBM memory will work with IBM machines. They were good enough to tell me that 4 sets of 4 beeps has something to do with the security chip but that was all they would say.

Do I have a bad memory chip or do I need to do something else for it to be recognized?

You can this:

Update the BIOS to the latest and also the controler.

After done that is and with only the 1gb chip installed if your lappy does not start then your ram is bad.

Do you use the software installer to update the BIOS? When you run it is there any available updates?

OK, I installed the software installer and went through the updates. The chip still won't work in the slot under the laptop. Does that mean it might be a bad chip?
