Hi All, I found this forum when looking for info on the IBM Thinkpad 770X, and gave thanks that I might have HELP!!!! lol,
a friend gave me a thinkpad 770X he didn't know much about it, only that it didn't have a OS. he gave me a copy of 98se but I don't know much about installing it, would there be anyone here that could help this Nuttty old lady, maybe talking me thro checking it out and putting in the OS??? I know the battery is bad. do I take it out???? and run it with the power supply only. till I get a new battery???
I am on a fixed income and can't take it to a shop to have it looked at so I have to do it myself.
Please can anyone help??

If the computer has a CD Rom drive, you should be able to boot from the CD. As you are powering on, hold F1 key until you get to the "Easy Setup" screen and you can make sure that your laptop is set up to boot from CD.

Next off, restart computer with CD installed and it should boot from that and you'll be able to install Win98 from there.

Thanks so much , before I start this do I take the battery out I seen on some of the other posts that running it with a dead battery could mess it up???

i don't see any reason to keep the dead battery installed. does the 770 keyboard flip up to access the hard drive, battery and drive like the 765D? i know that the 765 can't boot from CD, but the 770 may be different.

the keyboard don't flip up at least I don't think it does. to show how much of a dummy I am I don't even know where the battery is

Battery is on the side of the comptuer somewhere. You can get specifics by reading the hardware maintenance manual which is listed in the forums FAQ.

4 or 8mb of video ram...not bad for the ol' fella.

Back in the day, the 770s were the absolute top of the line. These things actually tend to have nicer specs than many of their 600 series siblings when they were still in production.

it looks like a 765 with the addition of the scroll button, (odd) 13.7" screen, and the p2. 14.1 was a nice addition to that model though.

so ya think this thinkpad is worth working on???
I just need to be told how to do it, and what I need to do it.
I got it into the easy setup. how do I check if it can boot from the CD?? if it does. do I boot with a boot disk or the 98se??

I guess it does not boot from the CD when I restarted with the CD in I got 19990305

I think I might have to take it to someone to look at,

well considering you gave up on getting answers here within 2 hours of posting your original question, i think you should relax a bit and see who else can chime in on this.

since its not an expensive machine, i couldnt see being charged an amount equal to its value for a simple procedure.

edit: i searched that error on google and saw that it is related to no hard drive found. did you follow alphakilo's advice above to hit F1 when the machine starts up? you need to change the boot order, and then try.

I might as well give up, was looking on the users guide, and I think it's to much for this wittle mind of mine

and if it has no hard drive. thats more $$$$ than I have.
is there any way to check if it has a hard drive or not?? and how???

You're going to have to meet us half way here, NuttSo. Lots of people here will be happy to help you figure things out no matter how much experience you have (or don't have!) with computers, but you're gonna have to do a bit of work on your end too.

To start with, as AlphaKilo and JHEM suggest, you will be better able to figure things out on your 770X if you take a look at the 770X/Z User's Reference and maybe also the 770 Hardware Maintenance Manual.

The User's Reference in particular will identify all the parts of your machine for you and also explain how to get different parts out, including the battery and hard drive. It also has a list of error codes and what to do about them. I would recommend trying again to take a look at it. I've listed specific page references below that should help you with each of your questions.

Error I9990305:

Your computer can't find the startup drive. Do the following:
1. Power off the computer.
2. Press and hold F1; then power on the computer to start Easy-Setup. Hold
F1 until the Easy-Setup menu appears.
3. Select the Start up icon.
4. Select the Power-on icon. If you are unable to set the startup sequence,
have the computer serviced.
5. Check the devices in the startup sequence box. Is the default drive listed in
the startup sequence box?
Yes Exit this window, and power off the computer.
No Select the Reset icon.
6. Is an operating system installed?
Yes Go to step 8.
No Install the operating system in your computer.
7. After you install the operating system, power off the computer.
8. Power on the computer.
If the same screen message appears, have the computer serviced.

Replacing the Battery Pack:

To replace the battery pack, do as follows:
1. Power off your computer; then disconnect the AC
Adapter and all cables from the computer.
2. Slide the left release latch to the left 1 and gently lift up
the bay eject lever 2 and pull out the battery pack 3 .
3. Insert the new battery pack until it snaps into place.
Make sure you align the slanted edge of the battery pack with
the slant on the battery bay.
4. Push in the bay eject lever until it is flush.
You have finished replacing the battery pack
(from page 38-39 fo the User Guide - there are pictures to help you!)

Upgrading the Hard Disk Drive
Follow the instructions on page 60 of the User Guide and following. That shows you how to pull out the hard drive. You will immediately discover if you have one or not once you try to pull out the drive.

Well I found out one thing about this laptap it has no hard drive in it so it will be a while before I can get one,

you can probably find a small capacity hd on here for around $1/GB.

Hi Guys, I am getting a hard drive from the board here. a
10.0GB/4200RPM - IBM Travelstar DJSA-210, will this one work ok with my 770X????

Yes.

Note that you also need a "caddy" for the hard drive. It is not clear if a 770 series hard drive caddy came with your machine or not, since a hard drive did not come with it.

the guy I bought the hard drive was nice he is giving me a caddy to go with it. now to find a cover, with the help of ya'll I found out what went in the open space on the side "lol" ( the hard drive )
will try to get the batterys around the 1st of next month,

Is he giving you a normal hard drive caddy, or a 770 caddy? They are TOTALLY different. A normal caddy is a wire tray that holds the drive in place, from the bottom. The 770 caddy is a solid caddy that encapsulates the ENTIRE drive. From memory, I think that the drive sits in sideways with internal connectors that lead to an external connector on the side...and that is where the caddy attaches to the 770. Make sense?

I want to thank you all again for your help, but looks like I am not gona be putting new life in my 770X any time soon, like I said before I am on a fixed income, and hubby and I are disabled. hubby had a heart attack last year and needed a triple bypass. we just found out the arterys are blocked again and he is in the hospital, that is 1 reason I wanted a laptop. was for when he or I was in the hospital, they have wi-fi.
if any of you have the parts I could use or a old laptop with wi-fi you would like to donate to this Nuttty old lady and hubby please PM me,
