T22 - Broken keyboard bezel - It's a serious thing!

#1 Post by speed3ple » Thu Jul 13, 2006 3:25 am

Hi all

My T22 got a crack in the keyboard bezel on the right side of this otherwise lovely machine. To me it was just a annoying plastic defect, but it turns out that it was far more seriuos!
Stupid lazy me - I delayed the repair for some months = bad idea!

When I finally ordered/got the part (46P2614) i discovered that the real reason for the broken keyboard bezel was a broken "Ultrabay 2000 guide rail". It's a piece of sheet metal that is crucial to the strenght of the machine and an important part in keeping the motherboard in the T2x series from fleksing too much. The guide rail was broken off near the hinge. (You can check your guide rail if you remove the CD-ROM and use a strong flashlight)

So I ordered the "System miscellaneous parts for T22 series" (12P4228)

When I waited for the parts, the motherboard gave up...

*** ARRRG!

I opened the machine once again and I was lucky, it was a loose inductor - so I just had to solder it back on.

Conclusion?
A broken plastic could be a seriuos thing.
The "Ultrabay 2000 guide rail" seems to play an important role in keeping the T22 motherboard from fleksing too much.
If Your keyboard bezel is broken - check the guide rail!

NOTE! The NEW guide rail was actually changed a bit, seems wider around the screwhole - probably a lot stronger - IBM is improving spareparts?

T2x series was/is a high quality machine!

Thanx for listening!
Best regards
