Question on how Rescue & Recovery works

#1 Post by bri » Thu Jul 13, 2006 1:04 pm

Where are the backup files stores, on the hidden partition?

It seems like a good idea to set it to exclude temporary internet and system files, which folders would these be?

The backups look like they are incremental. If I delete a backup, and try to restore from a later backup, will all the changes which are specific to that deleted backup be lost?

I create the backups on the Local hard drive and then later use the copy option to put them on DVDs and a USB harddrive, instead of checking off both Local hard drive and USB hard drive for the intitial backup. When I got to delete some backups, it says it will delete then from all media, does this include the after-the-fact copies too or does it mean just multiple copies from the initial backup?

This program is really confusing and the few pages in the help file doesn't really say anything. Maybe it's written for people don't really care how something works or care to keep their system efficient.

There is a whole lot more information here:

compared to the help file.

I believe the answer to your question is in the following thread.

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=21651

EDIT: The first backup is a base backup, and is complete. Backups made after this are incremental. Look in Access IBM help (blue Access IBM key) for more info on backups. You should also find information from the help button in the Rescue and Recovery program (or Rapid Restore Ultra program).

I read through that post, and through the whole Rescue and Recovery help file, so I have a better idea of where the files are stored and what they contain... but these questions still remain:

1) If I delete a backup dated earlier than the most recent one, and try to restore from a later backup, will all the changes which are specific to that deleted backup be lost?

2) If I delete files on the system, and then create a backup, will those deleted files be removed from the backup(s) (to save space) or would I have to manually remove them from the backups? That is, if I don't want them ever restored from backup.

3) I create the backups on the Local hard drive and then later use the copy option to put them on DVDs and a USB harddrive, instead of checking off both Local hard drive and USB hard drive for the intitial backup. When I got to delete some backups, it says it will delete then from all media, does this include the after-the-fact copies too or does it mean just multiple copies from the initial backup?

I went through some sections of the deployment guide but couldn't find what I was looking for. It's kind of unwieldly
