updated BIOS and now A:/ not working

#1 Post by PCSAR 4x4 652 » Fri May 14, 2004 8:47 am

Well, this is odd.
TP600X p3-650 12gig, 576 ram, win2kpro, tpconfig vrs 3.15.
A few days ago I updated the bios from ITETWW54 to the current bios rev of ITETWW55.
Now I always get this error ....

"The disk in A:/ is not formatted. Do you want to format now?"

The disks read fine in my other machine.

I swapped it for the one in my external drive - Same error.
Any Ideas??????????????????????

Is the FDD in the internal bay or in the external bay or do you get the error in both? Have you tried formatting a disk in the drive and then reading it?

The error can also be caused by an improperly seated drive in which one or more of the drive signal pins does not make proper contact, or the disk eject lever slightly pushed by something causing read/write problems.

Floppy drives for the 600 series, particularly the 600X, have the highest failure rate of any Thinkpad component we have experienced in our shop, or in warranty service. I suspect that your floppy drive failure is just a coincidental failure that has nothing to do with the BIOS changes. Try another floppy drive that works in other 600's, then see if it works with your Thinkpad. There were at least five different floppy drives offered for the 600X at various times, but I don't know of any that were particularly more reliable than any others.

I assume you have checked proper seating and cables, etc.

It sees the floppy in the drive it just won't read it. I just got a new external 600X flopy and have the same problem still. It errors out to it not being formatted and asks if I want to format it now, not that it's not there or not accessable.

I may just have to try reloaded win2kpro. I think it has something to do with the loading of a sparq drive driver.

600X and Floppy

#7 Post by Bruce Guttman » Thu May 20, 2004 2:36 pm

I have a similar problem with a 600E I'm trying to build from parts. The machine won't see a floppy in the Ultrabay, in the external housing connector, or connected to a SelectaDock III. Yet I can boot the thing fine from an LS-120! If I go into Easy Setup diagnostics, the floppy is always grayed. Yet if I put a disk in the floppy, it sees it, then can't read it.

We went in and tried to find a loose connection or broken wire. No dice. Got another 600E and it works fine with the same floppy drive. Still confused.

OK well, after the tedious task of reloading win2kpro from the recovery cd and re-updating everything........... windoze, TP drivers, etc.....

The Floppy drive now works internally, externally and in the dock III !!!!!!!!!!!!
