Yes, I know a little about the AIX OS. Regardless, I laughed when I first read that thread some months back where he called his ThinkPad: "My precious! :D ". [a take-off from Schmegel; from Lord of the Rings, of course!]

Well, I wasn't sure of the spelling, so I did my typical quick Google spelling test, and Google did not ask me if I didn't mean Sméagol. In fact, I first entered the name Schmegel in Google Image because I happened to have it open already, and a jpg of Sméagol from the movie was displayed. Thanks for the correction. :)

You know im just kidding around, but when doing a google image search, remember the chances that someone else will have made the same spelling mistake are extremely high. Deduction, not induction, or something like that. Anyways, whats your thinkpads name?

Google as a spellchecker; wow, that's about as useful as...Google talk, or Google video, or Google redundo-ware.

So, now I have another thing to get creeped out about....Somebody actually memorized Sméagol's name and typed it out *with the accent over the é*. :D

Don't knock it till you tried it. This is about the first time it has failed me. I do have my paperback dictionary handy for checking ordinary words, but some words just are not in it. Sméagol just happens to be one of those words. Actually I use the Google method mostly for proper names. It is about the fastest method I know of.

Oh I have tried it *and* have had it fail on many an occasion; so much so that I simply stick to using either no spell-checker or a light spell checker rarely. I tell you, few things are as handy as learning the english language from reading literature, and *NO* LoTR fan fic doesn't count since it can have even more spelling mistakes and ye oldye thyme fayke eynglysh.

Try searching for a medical term and you will see what I mean; even more so, you will get slightly perturbed at the amount of "authorities" online that mis-spell those very words. E.g. Tracheoscopy mis-spelled as Trachyscopy. Try it, you'll like spelling the currently popular mis-spelling correctly. :D

Well, I creeped myself out again.

Oh, and here is something that is quite effective as well as funny; I have a copy of this printed out as well and it should be in the Elements of Style by Strunk and White too! See

For the record, I knew it was spelled wrong, but I did a google define to get the right one, and copied and pasted to get the accent. I didnt have it memorized with the accent, lest you worry.

Unfortunately, my memory doesn't retain the spelling of words like it used to - starting to get senile I guess. I do have this thing about spelling, that I hate spelling errors in my writing. I often refer to my dictionary when I am unsure of a word's spelling, yet misspellings still creep in from time to time. I also dislike using built-in spell checkers because they tend to make one lazy IMO (old-fashioned I guess).

If I was in the medical, legal, or similar field that uses many specialized terms, I'm sure I would have a specialized dictionary handy for those terms.

I do enjoy reading, and used to read quite a bit. Unfortunately forum.thinkpads.com is consuming what used to be my reading time. :( Maybe one of these days I will get over this addiction, and start spending my time in more fruitful pursuits :) .

Back to the topic at hand, someone asked me what my computer name is. I am afraid I am not very original. My T42 is named...... 2378-5UU.

This forum isn't fruitful?

At least the posts here don't have too many spelling or grammatical errors in here as compared to many others on the internet. Not that I want to be the grammar police, but it does help. :D

I find that simply getting as much info as I can in my head is better than carting around several dictionaries or using the computer; I am not going to start futzing around with several dictionaries in the middle of Journal Club when the Lab PI askes me a particularly difficult question, as he is wont to do, and I have to answer now am I?

I also have names for my printers. :D

I usually just use the model name. The most unique name I've used was "BlackBox", and that was for an all black computer.

I had an attack of unoriginality when I called my T40 Paddy (or Patrick for a more formalised moniker).

My girlfriend has a bit more originality though...her Asus ( ) is called Henrietta. I'm not fussed if Paddy and Henrietta never meet in person, however I am keen one day to do a close comparison of bootup times and other possibly meaningless statistics :P

I'm working on it. :) I really do want to write better than I do. I am at a disadvantage, in that I have only done minimal writing for a number of years (unlike you Ivory Tower types). I really just began writing again regularly the last year or so (here as well as on some other forums). Sometimes I think I do ok, but other times when I look at what I wrote, I am disappointed. Generally, I don't think I make many spelling errors, but I am not so sure about punctuation. I don't always know whether to use a comma or not, or if a semicolon would be more appropriate. I think I might take a look at that book above. I have wanted to get a reference for punctuation usage, but I didn't know of a good one.

From the list Chris posted, I see one point in particular that I am guilty of: "85. The spoken word can look strange when written down, I'm afraid." However, at least I am not guilty of some of the other points: "63. And the dictionary on your shelf was not put there just for affect.", and "103. Spelling dictionaries should be made compulsary." I substitute a standard dictionary for a spelling dictionary (except when I use Google  ).

It would be annoying to find you on the network with spaces in the names.

Thanks guys, this is a great thread so far.

Oh and about the fork in this thread relating to writing. I second the strunk and white book "the elements of style". I have the fourth edition, it's quite informative.

Oh I don't know....Spaces aren't required for that as it, apparently, has been proven. Saying that one has an R52 that can swap its HDD, magically, with a T60 is a good example of how to do that. ;)

I don't know which is creepier; the fact that one would have to differentiate the two or the happen-stance of me remembering those lyrics.

Who knows, that might end up in my sig  :D

I'm sort of a bit behind the 8 ball as it is, since hers has a Dothan 1.6. But I looked through her startup in msconfig and that's where I think I'd get the advantage in terms of booting times  However she took quite a liking to the trackpoint as she was playing with it this weekend. Which is ironic since I actually *gulp* use the touch pad more than the trackpoint.

GENERAL ThinkPad News/Comments & Questions
General Questions, Rumors, Real news & More

Off Topic Stuff
Talk about "WhatEVER !".. like Forum comments and suggestions

The descriptions under each would still lead me to believe my thread is most appropriate in ThinkPad Question or General Question, both under this forum. If it were in the OT Stuff thread I would probably not assume that General goes off topic, and this thread does.

This thread under my original posting is in the right place if you ask me. Others have drug it OT.

There is no way you can put a T60's primary HDD (SATA interface/SATA Controller) inside an R52's primary HDD bay (PATA interface/SATA Controller, uses about the same board as a T43/p) and have it work; that isn't a matter of speculation or experimentation, that is a matter of the definition of what we know works and doesn't work based off of logic and common sense. It is similar to flipping the red switch to 115V on a PSU and plugging it into a wall outlet for 220V or vice versa (actually, you can try that if you want as proof as I don't mind) and saying it works "just fine." Although I guess that would futher depend on one's definition of "work"

Anyway, back on topic from now on; this thread kinda drifted but I think it should still be in the General forum for Thinkpads, it is just what names people have given their Thinkpad(s). Heck, I even got a pretty neat new sig from this ( :D ), so let's keep it going shall we? Besides, OT material can be split off anyway. :)

I named my ThinkPad Steven (but like I said, its not for network purposes).
