netoworking problems

#1 Post by adr1974 » Thu Aug 12, 2004 9:12 am

Hi all....
I'm using a 2374-7xu with the intel 2200bg and windows xp pro. In the events log, I was frequently getting a NetBT error with Event ID 4319. This stuff is way over my head, so I appreciate any help. Anyway, the error states that :

"A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network. The IP address of the machine that sent the message is in the data. Use nbtstat -n in a command window to see which name is in the Conflict state."

Syptomatically, clicking on view workgroup computers on my home network was very very slow, but worked fine once the computers were displayed. Like I said, most of this stuff is over my head, but what it seems is happening is that both my wired and wireless network cards are connecting to my network, and since they both have the same computer name, problems arise. When I turn off one card or the other, the problem completely disappears. My questions are 1. is this the normal state of affairs when using a computer with both wired and wireless network cards 2. if the answer to 1 is no, is there a better work-around than having to turn off wireless or wired? By the way, I'm using a Microsoft MN-500 wireless base station.

Again, many thanks in advance, and my apologies if i've failed to include any relevant specifics.

set up a profile in Access Connections for "Best Available" and it will use the fastest connection available.. so in your situation if you have a network cable plugged in and wireless is available it will turn off the wireless in favor of a wired (10/1000/1gb) network connection.

byron -- thank you for the response. unfortunately, i've been avoiding access connections. Do you know if there's a similar setting somewhere in windows?

thanks again.

whats wrong with access connections? by far one of my favorite IBM utilities.

ok.. so if you're still set on not using it, why not configure Fn+F5 to turn your wireless radio on and off... when you're on a wired network, toggle it to off... when u need wireless.... toggle it to on.
