Black screen after monitor turns on (tricky)

#1 Post by northyen.dk » Sat Jul 15, 2006 5:39 pm

Hey there,

It seems that an old problem I used to have with my T42 have returned in full force. If I don't remember wrongly, this issue occured right after installing a bundle of patches I had postponed (from last patch tuesday).

The scenario is this-

1. Boot into Windows XP
2. Pretending to be working
3. Closing lid
4. Opening lid

When I open the lid now, I get nothing on the screen but backlight. System still works though, as I can remote desktop to it. Which is the fun thing, because when I do that, a mouse cursour pops up on the T42. So I can see the mouse cursor and nothing else. Very strange.

Now, if I don't close the lid, and let Windows turn off the LCD, I can with no problems get 'back' into Windows (ie. everything as normal). So there's a difference in how Windows responds to close/open lid, and 'regular' turn off LCD.

Anyway, I fixed this problem before, and I believe power management (or the IBM services) had something to do with it. But I can't remember, maybe somebody here can give me a bump in the right direction?

If you have any ideas, please do respond :) - please don't post guesses, unless you know about this issue. I'm all capable of guessing solutions on my own :).

Alright, I found a different way to fix this little nuissance, so I don't have to guess what I'm looking at ;).

This little KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833740/en-us hands you a fix. It doesn't mention this to be a problem in SP2, but that's what I'm seeing anyway.

The KB says

"This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2."

The thing is, that's what I'm running, Windows XP SP2. Which is what I aimed at, by mentioning SP2 in the first place :).
