T-22 Long Start-Up Time

#1 Post by nrsmith100 » Tue Jul 18, 2006 3:55 am

Hello again,

Form the farthest reaches of Central Asia. now that I have a working 512 Mb worth of memory. I expected one side benefit would be an exponentially shortened Start-up time. Alas, it is not to be. my start up time from pushing the button to funtional mouse clicking is still averaging 7-8 minutes. It goes through this item called "starting up network connections" that seems to take near infinity. I am running Win2000 Pro S.P. 4. 20g hdd, 512 ram, 900 mhz. I remember long ago i could get it to start without all that stuff and it worked fine. I use a docking station at my workbut I do not believe it makes any difference.

Any clues as to how I can shorten my start-up time???

Thanks again,

Nate

If you have a pcmcia network card, remove the card before startup and try booting. Does it make a time difference? I know if I have a pcmcia network card installed, it does take a little more time(maybe 15-20 seconds) but managable.. Also, do you have quick boot option selected in the BIOS.. meaning, it does not count/test the memory on bootup..

If the card is in, remove it and reboot, if quick boot is not selected in BIOS, select it and retry..

We may need more information. There's a long list of network related issues, both hardware and software, that could be contributing to the long start up time. As examples:

Are you trying to connect to a domain/network share that isn't there? Is the network card functioning? Is the IP configuration incorrect? Is the workgroup name correct? Are the share names correct? Etc.

Without more information all I can say for sure is if "start up time...is averaging 7-8 minutes" something is wrong.

p.s. It's nice to hear that "all's well in Kyrgyzstan". It's possible Kyrgyzstan could be the only place that's true.

try getting the trial on

http://www.x-setup.net/

Program is called X-setup Pro.
There should be an option in it (cant find it right now //edit ->bottom) where u can change the behavior on connecting a mapped network-drive/folder.
U can choose to reconnect the drives on startup (which is currently ur setting) or that windows will reconnect when ur accessing the drive.

Marc

//edit

(In version 6.6 of x-setup pro)
Path to the option is: Startup/Shutdown\Startup\Windows NT/2K/XP\35) After Login Window\Login Options

Description:
Activate "Restore network connections on startup" to allow Windows NT to restore all previous made network connections on startup (that is, Windows NT starts EXPLORER.EXE). If this option is turned off, Windows will not restore the connections which speeds up startup. The network drives are then re-connected on first access.

Filename in the installdirectory is: XQ Network General
X61s
T30

1) try to hiberate instead of shutting down completely .

2) try pressing F8 during windows start. a menu will pop up and you can choose between non-network boot. try this and see if boot time decreases.

3) Kyrgyzstan sounds nice. I've been to Turkmenistan last year. Quite an "interesting" experience....
