About to order X60s - would appreciate comments
Hi
I am about to place my order this week but just want to clarify a couple of things.
I've narrowed the choice down to
UK05FUK - £1220 - 512MB Ram, 80GB HDD, Thinkpad a/b/g, 4 Cell, 1.32Kg
UK04EUK - £1373 - 2GB Ram, 60GB HDD, Intel a/b/g, 8 Cell, 1.6Kg
UK05PUK - £1319 - 1GB Ram, 100GB HDD, Intel a/b/g, 4 Cell, 1.32Kg
UK055UK - £1331 - 2GB Ram, 80GB HDD, Intel a/b/g, 4 Cell, 1.32Kg
actually I didn't have much choice asI wanted bluetooth and wifi and those were the only four X60s with BT and wifi. It seems that in the Uk you don't get much choice when it come to configurations. No ultra bright screen options, no options to 'build' your own spec.
I'm leaning towards the first option (http://www5.pc.ibm.com/uk/products.nsf/ ... enDocument, It has the Thinkpad a/b/g wifi all the others have Intel. I believe the Thinkpad wifi is the one to have. Is this a correct assumption?
Has anyone here ordered one of the above and care to comment.

I don`t own a X60(s), but the Thinkpad (mostly Atheros) WiFi definately is the choice to go for.
I am sitting next to a friend at university at the moment, both uf us are owning thinkpads. He has an Intel card and finds 3 WLAN`s (ESSID`s) while I can find (and connect to) 8 WLAN`s. Our Notebooks are maybe 30 cm apart, so he is really right next to me. Even for the WLAN`s we can both see, the signal strength at his Thinkpad is shown as about 20% worse.
I am happy to have the IBM card in my x31

Thanks erazor. It seems that I have no choice then but go for the UK05FUK with Thinkpad wifi. It really grates me that the configurations are so limited for the UK market.
hopefully it has the Thinkpad card is by Atheros.

I have each of the different brands of wifi cards in my various ThinkPads. The most recent T, X & Z 60 series (in my signature below), all happened to come with the Intel wifi card. I could not be happier with the performance of the Intel card. I use wifi exclusively as my broadband connection each and every day in a variety of locations, my office, my clients, Starbucks, airports etc and have enjoyed perfect performance.CyberDude wrote:I believe the Thinkpad wifi is the one to have. Do you know who you talked to? I'd like to be able to configure an ultralight, but I'm not really willing to lose the bluetooth or wireless wan options for it. If I could just swap in the ultralight screen on top of one of the CTO models, that would be awesome.lucas wrote:so i called up some girl at lenovo who was pretty awesome. it turns out that the x60s has two screens it can come with, the xga, or the ultralight ulxga. also, i guess the upgrade is free, you just have to add the part number (170294U) to your order.
Also, side note, does anyone know if the CPU in the X60s is socketed? Merom is coming out soon...

Thanks. I guess you're going to get good and bad reports about either card. It just happens that the model that suits me best has the Thinkpad card. If it had Intel it wouldn't have been a deal breaker.archer6 wrote:I have each of the different brands of wifi cards in my various ThinkPads. This is so true. Especially in the case of wifi, as it's so susceptible to interference from other devices. A case in point, the other day I'm at a clients office that implements wifi. While on the network all was well for about an hour, and then the connection would drop. This was something that all 12 people on the network noticed. All had different brands/models of laptops.CyberDude wrote:I guess you're going to get good and bad reports about either card.
Then within minutes the signal was back and everyone could reconnect to the network. Again after about 45 minutes to an hour the signal would fail. So, to make a very long story short, it ended up being the new wireless phones that had been installed a few days earlier. They switched the phones out for handset with a different frequency and now it's stable and reliable again.
