RESOLVED: Connecting HD as Slave Drive

#1 Post by Em1 » Wed Jul 19, 2006 10:41 am

I'm having serious problems with windows so I pulled my HD and wanted to hook it up to my PC to save some files. But the wire is too big to connect onto the HD.

Is there some sorta converter sold to fit it?

One more question, I have all my BIOS settings set to boot to CD ROM but my t23 still won't boot from CD ROM. Any suggestions?

Resolved: I was able to save all my files and I found a restore CD that works. After that it was all elementary. I'm up and running again with all my files. It has been a frustrating 3 days. Thanks to everyone for their help.

You need a 3.5" desktop IDE to 2.5" laptop IDE converter.

Widely available at computer shops for under $10.

If your location was in your profile, I could have probably told you exactly where to go to get one!

If I understand the question correctly, you want to be able to connect your laptop's 2.5" drive into a desktop's 3.5" drive cable. Yes, there indeed is a conversion cable for that. A couple of examples are:

(used Yahoo search: laptop connector convert ide)

Without further information it could be several different things. Does the CDROM drive work normally (i.e. able to read disks in Windows)? What type of boot disk are you trying to use? Have you tried hitting the F12 key when powering on and then selecting the CDROM drive?

Thanks. I'm heading out to go get a converter now.

The CD rom drive does work normally and I have tried the f12 key and powering from there.

I'm trying to repair my windows 2000. I have downloaded the 4 bootable windows floppy disks and it worked booting from there. However, once they are done setting up Windows and bring me to the option screen asking me to install windows or repair it, it says the CD rom drive with the Windows 2000 disc isn't present.

At this point I try to eject the floppy & drive and put in the cd rom drive but the computer shuts down as soon as I take out the floppy.

I tried running the boot disks from an external floppy drive but when it comes time for the computer to restart I get an "inaccessible boot device" error.

Update: I think my inability to just normally boot from the disc and fix the problem comes from the copy of windows I have. I think it's one of those bootleg CDs. So now I'm gonna try and find a legit copy of Windows 2000 Pro.
