Lid/Resolution problem -- WHY WON'T THEY FIX THIS?
Lid/Resolution problem -- WHY WON'T THEY FIX THIS?
I've got a new z60t and it has this dreaded lid closing resolution problem. Like others, I've tried everything, with varying degrees of success. I'm someone who likes closing the lid when not using it so this is really annoying me. I mean, this is a brand-new computer and Lenovo can't seem to fix this problem, which is apparently widespread across the different series.
I've tried the BIOS update that supposedly was supposed to fix it and it didn't. But here's the thing: I updated to version 1.19 which is the June date, and yet in my system config it says I have 1.19 (the latest) but lists the April (see: old version's) date! So now if I try to reinstall it it won't do it since it thinks it already is the latest, but is obvious something didn't go through right.
I've called Lenovo twice now and neither operator was familar with the lid problem. Nothing seems to work. Is it just me, or is this ridiculous?

I fixed this following the suggestion by Henry Winter posted at Notebook Review.
I uninstalled the presentation manager but Fn + F7 still works fine, it just doesn't pop up the IBM presentation software anymore which is OK with me.
No more resolution change. I think it's problem with the IBM software which they try to resolve issuing new bios update.
Hopefully it helps.

I tried that weeks ago. I've been running without Presentation Manager for a while. No change. I tried with old PM, newest PM, no PM.ThinkZ61 wrote:I fixed this following the suggestion by Henry Winter posted at Notebook Review.

Sorry, I thought this was an answer to my problem (4 posts ago).
Please ignore my post.

o1sowise try this:
- Uninstall PM
- Press Fn + F7
It might show black screen
- Press Fn + F7
There should be 2 green screen icon displayed on the bottom of the screen
- Go to display properties and change resolution for both screens to 1280 x 768
- Press Fn + F7 one more time
There should be 1 green screen icon displayed now
- Go to display properties and change resolution to 1280 x 768
Now, try closing your LID and see what what happens.

Well, that's definitely the best fix yet, but it's still not truly fixed. That definitely helps, though, since it's quicker to go back to normal than the old way. Still, it blinks a few times. I definitely give you credit on coming up with the best solution so far, but it's still not instant as if it wasn't switching to anything at all. Nevertheless, thanks.ThinkZ61 wrote:o1sowise try this:

Well mine is z61t model # 9442EAU. I don't think there is anything wrong with the laptop. There might be a bug in the ThinkPad Presenation Manager software. After I uninstalled I don't have any problem at all. No more re-arranging the icons.

That's odd since everyone else who has tried uninstalling the Presentation Director has reported no change, or at least no solution. I've tried everything, including that, to no avail.ThinkZ61 wrote:Well mine is z61t model # 9442EAU. I don't think there is anything wrong with the laptop. among other fixes:
(Fix) When the LCD is closed and opened, the screen resolution may be changed to 800x600 (Only the models with the Intel video chip).
Note: After the BIOS update, update or re-install the video driver with version 6.14.10.4466a or higher.

This has been tried many times and despite the fact it says it fixes it, it doesn't.u2wedge wrote:http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-61687

resolution fix
The bios update fixed it in one of my laptops...
I have had different experiences with different Z60t laptops. Have a look at the adapter properties: some laptops display different video adapter/monitor features. When I messed with some of the adapter settings (right click on desktop/properties/settings/advanced) , it fixed the reslolution change. Still it is strange that some computers show advanced color/sizing properties and others don't, so there ARE different programs for the adapter settings. It seems that sometimes they fix something, break something else in the process, and come back and fix what they broke later. At the moment I have 2 different update programs, a software installer, and update manager, that seem to do the same thing in different ways.....

My Z60m has done this, although it was an isolated incident because it's only ever happened once and I open/close my laptop quite regularly because my room is dusty. I wasn't aware this was a systematic error until I happened upon this thread, I figured it was just a one-time random bug.jagged wrote:Is the same problem occuring on the Z60m as well?

I posted a new thread because I hadn't seen these old threads until it was pointed out to me. I didn't search far enough back since I assumed this was a new problem because it didn't happen to me until I recently updated the ATI X600 drivers with the ones released in September 2007.
The official fix in the BIOS specifies the intel video chip, but still I updated the BIOS, ECC, uninstalled Presentation Director, uninstalled the X600 dispaly adapter, reinstalled the X600 drivers, and then tried the Fn+7 fix I quoted above.
The Fn+7 work-around didn't help because I can't set the second display to 1680x1050. I can set the 2nd display to that, but it doesn't take - it just goes right back to 800x600.
I still have the problem, so I simply don't close the display.
