Getting a discount on a new T42.

#1 Post by adrenalincreek » Thu Aug 12, 2004 5:21 pm

Hey guys,

I am looking to buy a new T42 15". What options do I have to get the best possible discount? Have a student of mine buy it for me to get student discount? Can I do this? How about an IBM employee?

Please let me know what options are available.

Thanks very much!

I would love to know as well. I would like to order the 2379DXU which has the 15" monitor. I know anyone can get 5% off using various credit card promotions, but there mus t be a way to get a deeper discount. In May of this year this model discounted by 10% with various credit card offers.

What other option exist to get a good deal?

Thanks,
Budge

By the way I don't think that Bill carries this specific model, so therefore I do not believe this is an option, but correct me if I am wrong!

if you can find a way to legitimately get a student discount, that would be the cheapest. It may be difficult to get a friend to do it for you, because the student discounts are limited to 1 unit. Other than that, contact Bill; the units that he carries are always changing....

Is the "Student Discount" a standard percentage? I called IBM inquiring about a student dicount and they said that because the model I want is an Express model (2379DXU) and is already substantialy discounted that they can only offer a student an additional 5% off, which is the same discount anyone can get, student or not.

This does not seem right? Please let me know if this has been your experience? I kind of get the feeling that dealing with IBM is like dealing with a used care salesman. I was reading in the archives of this forum how someone was able to negotiate a price well below the MSRP with free shipping with the IBM agent while on the phone. I will see if I kind find the post.

Thanks for your help,
Budge

Really though I mean he has the best prices... Your on the website that HE built/owns, and thanks to him you have a place to ask these questions... No Sales Tax... He will check the screen for dead pixals... And while it might not be as professional as talking to the lifeless "I hate my job because Im 42 and work the sales department at IBM" person; you still get the same product... with the same warrenty... all through a nice guy and a registered dealer of ibm products...

I am sure there are reasonable and logical reasons why some people dont buy from Bill... Maybe something to do with taxes or something i have no clue... but its his forums, so at least say something like "sorry i cant buy from bill because yadda yadda yadda, but i still want the best price soooo what do i do?"

Biggie,

I hear what your saying, but I don't believe that Bill carries the 2379DXU. I am looking for the best deal though. Where can I view his inventory?

Thanks,
Budge

http://www.thinkpads.com/start.htm

And if he doesnt have it then email him and he will order it... thats what i did for my 2373-GVU...

Right now he is running 10% discounts... I would go to ibm and get the very best price you can whether its 15% off or 10% off, then tell Bill your offer and tell him what he can do for you.

I never personally did that because all i could get from IBM was 11% with sales tax included, and bill was offering 15% off at that point in time...

Best deal -- Harvard students have a 33 to 41% discount on select p41 and p42p. How do you like this?

2373H12
T42 PM1.5GHZ 512MB 40G COMBO XP IBM
Regular: $1,993.50
Harvard: $1,329.00

2373H14
T42P PM1.8 512MB 60GB COMBO SXGA XP 9cell battery
Hegular: $2,857.50
Havard: $1,905.00

2373H16
T42P PM1.8 1GB 60GB DVD-RW 15" UXGA XP 9cell battery
Regular: $3,583.50
Harvard: $2,389.00

2373JU9
T41 1.6GHZ 512MB 60GB COMBO SXGA XP
Regular: $2,648.00
Harvard: $1,562.00

These H12/H14/H16 models are "custom-built" for Harvard.

I'm getting the $1,905 model. I'm just not sure I need the high-capacity battery...
