Dothan or Banias?

#1 Post by simms » Thu Jul 20, 2006 7:50 am

I used to have a T40 motherboard in my T42. Tech swapped it out to a T42 motherboard and now it reads Dothan.

1) My question is, is this really a Dothan chip? If it was the case, how could they swap the CPU from one to another. A Dothan chip wouldn't work in a T40 Banias mobo, and a Banias wouldn't work in a T42 (?) Is there a concrete way to tell what my CPU is?

2) edit: Rats... I just checked the FSB which is at 400MHz. Is this a Banias or a Dothan? I read that Dothans have a 533MHz FSB, but only for Sonoma, which is on the T43, and not T42. So are T42s non-Sonoma but they are Dothan?

try cpu-z from here http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

it`s the best program to check that. and it`s a very small download and needs no install.

Thanks, that's what I used to see my FSB and everything else.

It says "Dothan" but I'm not sure if that's due to the new mobo I got, so basically I can word it in two statements:

1) Dothan Processors can be used in both T40 and T42 systems. True or False?

2) Dothan Processors in a T42 can only run at 400MHz FSB because they are non-Sonoma. T43 uses a Sonoma chipset and can run Dothan's at 533MHz FSB. True or False?

If both of these are true, then I really have no other option but to believe my CPU is a Dothan.

Here are the answers:

It says "Dothan" but I'm not sure if that's due to the new mobo I got, so basically I can word it in two statements:

1) Dothan Processors can be used in both T40 and T42 systems. True or False? True with the bios updated to the latest

2) Dothan Processors in a T42 can only run at 400MHz FSB because they are non-Sonoma. T43 uses a Sonoma chipset and can run Dothan's at 533MHz FSB. True or False? Dothan with 400fsb are one and the 533fsb are different same socket but are not the same the T42's came. Only came in T43's

If both of these are true, then I really have no other option but to believe my CPU is a Dothan. You did have a Dothan when IBM replace the mobo the new one most of the time comes with the cpu.

it's the mother board issue, dothan on t42 mother board can only run as 400mhz.
