T42 vs. T43

#1 Post by Tom_C » Thu Jul 20, 2006 10:00 am

My A31p is still working well but I would like to upgrade to something with 2GB of memory, built in wireless, USB 2.0, and Gigabit ethernet.

The T42 and T43 both seem to be about what I want. In general, what are the differences between them? What would I gain by getting a T43 vs. a T42?

Higher FSB (400 vs 533)
DDR2 Memory (T42 takes PC2700, T43 takes PC5300? I'm not sure about that.)
More known problems (T42 is known to be more solid than the T43)

I don't know what you mean by "more solid" considering they use the same chasis. The T43 gets hotter, but thats do to a different processor.

Thanks.

CPU speed isn't very important to me, so it looks like the T42 would work well for me.

The heat produced by the CPU depends primarily on what clock the CPU is running at. If you foresee a need for more CPU power later on (along with needing to use PC Express cards and different memory, you could get a T43.

Then again, if you aren't that concerned with the CPU but want everything else top notch, you should just get the T42 as it will be more than enough to suit your needs. :D

"Everything else top notch" is why I'm getting a ThinkPad. Otherwise I'd just get a Dell.

Seriously, thanks to the feedback here, I now have a T42 on the way.

I also strongly advise upgrading your warranty. I myself have 2 years left of Next Business Day service and I would probably never get Depot... it's just a great feeling when they come to your office and repair it right in front of you.

Have you needed ThinkPad service? Long ago I had to send my 701 in for service but nothing since then. And with over a million airline miles for me and my ThinkPads, they definitely get plenty of rough use.

I sent the 701 off on a Friday and figured I'd start looking for it to show up in about a week. IBM got it Monday, repaired it the same day and sent it right off. I got it Tuesday. I was impressed. Haven't needed service for anything since then.

It's just good insurance when dealing with something known to be delicate and requiring expensive repairs should something go wrong. The fortunate thing is that if one needs service outside of warranty one can purchase out of warranty coverage for 1 year at ca.$160/yr. Though I think there is a 30-day waiting period, or not? That's better than having to decide between a $600 repair, junking the computer, or trying to scronge parts on eBay to attempt a self-repair.

Congrats on your purchase!

I've got a T42 too (9 months ago) without any fail until now, it came with a 3 year guarantee and expect not to use it in the future... this thing is extremely well designed and manufactured. It's a horsework machine, fast, noiseless and almost zero heath coming out from the vents...

The only one thing missing is a better video card... but I can live without it, or to put it in other words I wouldn't change better video quality if the other specifications of this model were not the same.
