anti virus and Thinkpads

I use Microsoft One Care. I have a big family and six computers at home. The three-machine price, easy installation and "care circle" groups make it pretty easy to take care of. And it is ever fairly good at removing the trial packages of similar software. (Just like you'd expect from Microsoft.)

Symantec Client Security 10 on all Windblows XP/Vista boxen/partitions. I'm with JD, lightweight, opaque and a bulldog on threats. I've been using it a long, long time, it's a corporate thing......
ClamAV or Kaspersky on the Linux boxen/partitions.

I've tried them all and this is where I stay........

ESET Security Suite, IMHO...
Works great to me, and consumes very little system resources.
Built-in firewall, spyware and adware catcher, and OFC NOD32 integrated too.

The original question that started this thread way back in 2006 was about BitDefender. I'm currently using their Anti Virus 2008, which is my third purchase.

I've used it for years. It updates a couple of times a day - they're very serious about keeping it up to date. I've never had a virus (thank God), and they have a 24-hour hotline that's been just fine the few times I've called, including at 2 a.m. just the other night. (Although I have to admit that - being in Germany - calling them in Romania is no big deal. By the way, the various people I've spoken to there spoke excellent English.)

The multi-user license is pretty cheap, and - as I've said - it works fine.

I use ZoneAlarm, Windows Defender and Antivir Classic.

Those programmes are free, but attention to detail is invaluable. I'm glad to see that ThinkPad users are paying so much attention to security.

Most computer users aren't as vigilant.

Since I have Windows Vista, which came with my TP, I'm using Avira AntiVir Free Edition + Windows Firewall + Windows Defender. I also tried F-Secure IS2008 but this slowed down my machine enormously. So far, I didn't have any problems...

Zone Alarm Suite 6.5 wasn't too bad on this T21 but at some point
I kept having problems updating the anti-virus signatures.
Upgraded to the latest 7.x version (which uses Kaspersky for
AV) but memory and resource usage was a bit much for this
machine.

Later I went with a combo of Sunbelt's Personal Firewall,
Sunbelt CounterSpy, and AVG Free. Not too bad.
At the moment though I'm beta testing Sunbelt's new VIPRE
Antivirus offering which combines antivirus and antispyware into
one engine. The claims of lower memory and resource usage is
true so far. Impact is minimal compared to the previous security
stuff I was using.
Assuming the anti-virus portion is up to snuff with regards to
detection VIPRE might turn out to be the solution for this
old laptop. We'll see.
