Wrong memory module for T42

#1 Post by Scarecrow » Thu Aug 12, 2004 10:07 pm

Hello,

After playing around with my new T42, I found the memory module shipped with this laptop (according to part lookup page at IBM website) is PC2100, instead of the correct PC2700 (according to spec.). Very sad....

I suggest people check this page:
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... sLookup.vm

and make sure you get the right kind of memory.

I just contacted support, and I will see what they say....

Use a program to determine whether you have the 2100 memory or not.

It's IBMs mistake, I'm guessing all of them would say 2100 on that website even though you have the 2700 memory.

I just ran CPU-Z and it says I have Hyundai Electronics PC2700 memory.....Now I am happy again.....
Fortunately, my heart was strong enough with the part lookup results....

I find it really amazing that intelligent people can be so gullible - what is it with people that believe EVERYTHING they read - if you're so worried, unscrew the [censored] memory cover and check.

Forum regulars - and people who know how to type the word 'search' - will know that IBM (and Bill Morrow) can't type - numerous are the errors on the website, in the TA books etc. etc. We all find this rather quaint, and have a good laugh, but noone (to my knowledge) beleives what is written WITHOUT checking first - don't panic guys, the sky isn't falling yet (well, it hasn't been mentioned on the IBM site yet at least...)

PS. I forgot to mention, this is being typed on an Icelandic keyboard and the battery was made in Scunthorpe - I really can't find anything better for typing with gloves on...

Folks,

You don't even need a program to check. Want to verify what memory you have? Remove the 4 screws (14") or 3 screws (15") that hold the keyboard in place, pop up the keyboard and LOOK at the SODIMM. It will tell you right on there what the memory size/speed/part number is.

IBM has been making a ton of typos on their site with regard to ThinkPad specs. The TABOOK seems to be the most accurate, second would be the Hardware Maint. Manual. But everything else, from the support pages to the marketing spec sheets seem to have some inconsistencies.
