I ask because I always do fresh install.

That and it's cheaper than the ultrabase.

So I assume that you can boot off the Ultrabase?

Pardom me for the question, but I was just about to ask it on a fresh thread.

I would say so.

I have X40 and X24. They can all boot of a USB dvd drive. I cannot imagine IBM would disable this feature.
currently own X61S, T42, X31, Macbook Pro Unibody i5

Yes. I have an external USB 2 optical drive and I booted off of it to install Vista and run Knoppix.

The machine can also boot off a floppy, USB flash drive, network, and probably a few other drives as well. Probably can't boot off the SD card reader and I don't think it can boot off the PCMCIA reader.
