Are we too commercialized?

#1 Post by AlphaKilo470 » Mon Jul 24, 2006 11:07 am

I saw this on the internet today:
http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,7 ... html?f=rss

A Monopoly board game sans the cash and with mock Visa Debit cards and a cardreader taking place of the good ol' paper. Is this really going overboard with advertising? I also can't help but think this is an ongoing part of the age-old trend of not only slapping annoying advertising in peoples faces but getting them to pay to have that adverising in their face.

You mean when I bought my first Coca-Cola yoyo 50 years ago, it was just the start of a slippery slope....

Cheers,

Yeah, same concept as when you buy a t-shirt with a logo on it for many times more than what you'd pay for the same shirt without that logo. Abercrombie and Fitch comes to mind in that concept.

t-shirt with a logo on it

Well, I get around that by waiting for the T shirts to show up at the local thrift stores. I recently found two of the "much coveted" Bloomsday T shirts, and I didn't even have to run the race!!

Even though this does stray slightly from topic, it's still advertising and it's funny enough for me to mention:

My girlfriend and I saw the Visa version of Monopoly at a department store last week - she thought it was a bit weird, as do I after seeing it this second time! I find it a bit amusing that the price for Mayfair (and undoubtedly the other London landmarks) have kept the same prices and not been adjusted to more "21st century" prices

I'll stick with the classic version myself.
