I've just had an error message 8600 series indicating trackpoint problem. Can't even get into diagnostics with F1 key.
How do I remove keyboard and can I disable entire trackpoint device.
Hours before problem I was having problem with key row under the F keys generating wrong codes.
I'd really appreciate any help.
removing 770Z keyboard
You won't be able to entirely disable the TrackPoint without getting into Easy-Setup (aka BIOS/CMOS/Disagnostics).
If you can get into Windows (or whatever OS) you can disable the TrackPoint using the IBM ThinkPad Configuration utility. But that won't stop the 860x error.
If you have an external PS/2 keyboard you should be able to use it to get into Easy-Setup. Sometimes you can get past error messages by pressing ESC and/or F1 during boot-up. This might allow you to get into your OS.
I don't think it is very easy to pull out just the TrackPoint from the keyboard assemby, so the usual recommendation is to replace the entire keyboard, along with the TrackPoint, if the error cannot be stopped by cleaning and/or checking cables.
Disassembly instructions are provided in the 770 Hardware Maintenance Manual. There is a note about this in the thinkpads.com FAQ.
