The problem : The lcd of my T42 would randomly turn black and I would have to turn the screen down and up to see things normally.
This would happen radomly and at this point i decided to send in the laptop to IBM (under warranty).
A few days later i got a call saying that the screen was cracked and I would have to pay 895 + tax. Being a poor postdoc, I decided to get the laptop back to think about further options.
When i received the laptop i realised the screen had to crack during transport (at this point i realised what a cracked screen really meant). So i called and they said they would resolve the issue and I resent them the laptop.
Today i again got a call telling me the same thing - lcd cracked, not coverd etc etc. I told the lady the history and she referred the case to a dispute agent. She said the the people i talked to didnt follow procedure.
I am absolutely sure that I did not crack the screen. How do i convince ibm that it the screen must have cracked during transport ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated here.

it all comes down to your word against their word..sdatta wrote: I am absolutely sure that I did not crack the screen. How do i convince ibm that it the screen must have cracked during transport ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated here.
you need to ask yourself who would YOU believe if the situation were reversed.. ?
that said, assuming that the display was not cracked when you packed it how could it be damaged in transit..
if the carton is crushed, then it is shipping damage..
have words with the shipper..
if the carton is pristine and there is no external damage to the thinkpad case then it sure looks like you might have been damaged while with you..
or by another person who might have had access..
and this might be the cause of the display problem described above..
it is not unknown for something (a pencil, cap from a ballpoint pen or the like) to be left on the keyboard when closing the top..
i hate to take the part of the repair boys, who have suspicious minds, but it sure begins to look like it was damaged when you sent it in..
the solution..?
bite the bullet and head for ebay and see if you can find a display, there..
then replace it..
the displays are all pretty much the same, T40 thru T43..
and it may be that your particular display is common to many other thinkpad models..
you can learn this by checking the build list by using the machint model/type and s/n at the ibm/lenovo website..
the HMM will give you directions on how to repair it..
