Norton Antivirus on IBM T4x Preload - trial or full version?

#1 Post by csv96 » Fri Aug 13, 2004 10:16 am

Is the Norton Antivirus 2004 on the IBM T4x Preload a trial version or full version? Is there an easy way to extract the NAV install files from the hidden partition without having to restore to factory contents?

If it is like NAV 2003, it is a full version, but with a 90-day subscription. Then Symantec wants nearly the full price to get a 1-year subscription. I use Symantec Client Security Corporate (much better, but it is hard to get outside of a corporation). So I just uninstalled NAV. If you don't wish to use Norton, then just uninstall it.

The NAV files should be in C:\IBMTOOLS. They are on my T41. I think you can use them anywhere but you still face the 90-day limitation. Anti-Virus is useless without updates so if you want to use NAV on the ThinkPad or elsewhere, you have to pay. ... JDHurst.

Or why not try a free program? Like AVG for example (no, I don't work for them...) I've been testing this on a few machines recently and it's caught everything that's going around at the moment...

After reloading several desktops belonging to friends (because they didn't have anti-virus software and became majorly infected), I've always installed AVG and I too have found it to be very, very effective. You can set it to update every day, and can always manually update it, if you hear of a new virus coming around.

I would install it on my DKU, but I'm in an academic environment, where I buy Norton 2004 and OfficeXP Pro for $50 and have to install Norton...

I will third AVG. I have been using it and recommending it for over a year now.
Just to be thorough you might want to go to the trend micro site and do a housecall scan.
It seems to catch the few things norton and AVG might miss.

I also strongly recommend AVG. It is free and I find it to be much faster and more effective than NAV. My friend had a bunch of virus's on his laptop which NAV wasn't detecting but whic AVG found instantly!
