TP 600 - internal modem not recognized by W98 SE??
I'm having an incredibly hard time getting my TP 600 internal 56Kbps modem to work with Windows 98 SE.
The ThinkPad Configuration program says the internal modem is associated with COM3, but W98 doesn't seem to recognize COM3 at all.
I also have a PCMCIA modem, but removing and uninstalling that doesn't help.
I've tried the Install New Hardware route, but Plug & Play autodetect doesn't seem to detect the modem and I don't see anything like the ThinkPad internal modem among the list of modems it gives as other choices.
Now to make things stranger, if I replace the machine's internal hard disk with another that has Windows 2000 loaded, the internal modem works fine.
I was able to learn from this, though, that the following is somehow related to the internal modem hardware:
MF\ACPModem437
This has got me stymied. Any suggestions, leads, pointers etc. would be appreciated.

Sure, it's a model 2645 450. Usually I try to include this information, I didn't think it made a difference this time.cmarti wrote:What is your machine type number?
It would be good if you provide your current hardware configuration.
If by "hardware configuration" you mean something else, please let me know.
Since you're in Puerto Rico, I guess you speak Spanish. Can you tell me what is the English equivalent of the Windows 2000 boot option, Moda de Depuracion? (This seems to be the only way I can reliably boot my TP in Windows 2000).

So far it's looking like a driver issue, but knowing that alone isn't of much use.
I went to
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... SHY-3ZBVUV
to download the latest internal modem driver, packaged in the file Acpcw32.exe.
After unpacking this file, I ran the setup.exe file and got this message:
Setup has detected existing ThinkPad Modem driver software.
You must remove it before installing new driver software.
The readme.txt file says:
>>>>>
If you have a previous version of the software on your PC, and you want to upgrade/re-install or remove it, you must follow these steps:
1. Only after downloading the ThinkPad Modem executable to your ThinkPad, click on "Start". Select Settings --> Control Panel, then double click on "ThinkPad DSP".
>>>>>
Now the questions are:
a. What is the "ThinkPad Modem executable"" The documentation that accompanies Acpcw32.exe, namely Acpcw32.txt, is titled ThinkPad Modem for Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000, which seems to suggest that the setup.exe is, or is a step needed to install, the ThinkPad Modem executable.
But that is circular: I have to unsinstall old drivers to run setup.exe; but I need to run setup.exe to uninstall the old drivers.
b. What is Thinkpad DSP?

Modo de depuracion in english is like cleaning mode more or less I never have heard that.
My suggestion would be go to windows update website then update the OS to the latest, when I had the modem in my 600x I used the windows driver and that did work fine. But I used at that time XP not 2000 and when I ask you about the config. what I was looking how much ram did you have because you could use XP instead of 2000.
Good luck...

I don't see that in the readme.txt on the page you linked to. Did you try just following the instructions there? It looks like the update will automatically uninstall your old driver for you if you get that message. Does that work?jsuebersax wrote:1. This is related to sound processing. Your modem has sound properties that involve it in sound processing. Offhand, I can't say what DSP means: "Digital Signal Processing"?What is Thinkpad DSP?
I don't have a 600 or 600E, just a 600X. There were issues with the MWave modems that I don't understand. As a result, IBM offered updates that made the modems work with the built-in sound card instead of using their own special sound processing thingies...or something. Anyways, that is why it wants you to uninstall your old driver I think.
Also, others here have previously run into similar difficulties, and maybe their experiences will offer some clues:

From ThinkPad Configuration, click on "Internal Modem" (it's on the lower left).
Make sure "Enable" is selected.
