t20 wireless help.

#1 Post by ENicolas1985 » Tue Jul 25, 2006 7:21 pm

i have a t20
specs are:
Windows XP Pro (2002 edition)
Intel Pentium III
696 Mhz
384 MB of RAM
11.2 GB

and what im using are:
D-Link DWL-G122 802.11g
http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=334
PCMCIA CARD (generic from ebay)
http://cgi.ebay.com/4-PORT-USB-2-0-PCMC ... dZViewItem

and im having problems trying to connect to the internet wirelessly? i installed all of the drivers correctly. and all im getting is the D-Link icon in the bottom right keeps scanning up and down and when i hover over with the mouse it says "Not Connected!". the wireless connection icon pops up and i click the balloon to open up the window that shows the available connections and it shows the connection. i select it and click on the connect button and the window closes but all i get still is the "Not Connected!"

if anyone has any suggestions or help or anything please help!!!

I'm suprised, that ANY wireless network shows up with the USB 2.0 PCMCIA CARDBUS ADAPTOR card you've bought...

You will need a Wireless PCMCIA cardbus adapter (eBay link). Make sure to get a 802.11g card. If you are uncertain, ask here again before you place a bid.

I still don't know how you pickup a wireless signal without a wireless card...

it looks like he has the dlink plugged into the pcmcia usb port to me. Those dlinks aren't the greatest but they will pick up a signal.

Not to put words in Orevin's (virtual) mouth, but I guess he's wondering why you are using two pieces of hardware when only one is needed? Granted, if you already had these components then it's not costing you any more money to connect wirelessly. Or maybe you need to use several other USB peripherals with your laptop at the same time you want to be wireless. In any case, most people would simply buy a PCMCIA wireless card (matching whichever access point you have). It only takes up one slot (not two like your USB 2.0 card). D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, and many, many others make these cards. Personally, I use D-Link DWL-650 and Netgear MA401 cards (802.11b), however I'm trying to switch over to Mini PCI 802.11g units.

Ah, I see... you must have missed the part in the OP's message where he says he is using a D-Link DWL-G122 802.11g. I believe it's a USB wireless adapter, hence the need to have a PCMCIA to USB card.

(edit: The D-Link is USB 2.0 enabled so it looks like he's trying to match that speed since the T20 only has built-in USB 1.1)

My mistake, shame on me. I didn't check the D-Link device, I thought it's the router...

ENicolas1985, do you have any wireless encryption activated?

Orevin,

what is the encryption you are talking about? if its the WEP key/code then there isnt one. i dont have one at home at the moment(just trying to keep it simple for now until i get connected) and there isnt one at the library where i try to connect.

also i have a t20 so the usb on the back is 1.1(as stated) and i have a few other usb devices like blue tooth adaptors and an external drive that i need the 2.0 usb ports for.

make sure that they dont run both to config on device.

if you installed the dlink software that comes with the hardware it should automatically disable the windows configuration, or at least ask during the install if you want dlink to manage your wirless connection.

I'd try two things, first go to the properties of your wireless connection and click wireless networks, at the top is a box to allow windows to configure your wireless connection, uncheck it if it is checked. If that is already unchecked remove and reinstall the dlink software and follow the little guide closely.

Dlink / T20

#17 Post by whizzer » Wed Aug 02, 2006 10:05 pm

I used to have a Netgear Wrg111 Usb stick running on XP/pro T20. Worked, but did that little sucker get hot. Switched to a Dlink Pcmcia 11g card. Works great, don't use the Dlink software, stick to the windows software. Check your router, sounds like it is setup incorrectly.
