Power Management
Power Management
When I view the System Properties, I get the following statistics:
"Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2400 @ 1.83GHz 987MHz"
This remains the same whether or not I am in "Maximum Battery Life" or in "Maximum Performance" mode.
Does this mean that my CPU is only running at 987MHz instead of 1.83GHz when I am in "Max Performance" mode?

try this small program to properly test it (it`s small, needs no install etc.)

Hi _erazor_,
Thanks for the link.
Now here's the wierd part. I tried switching between the 2 modes several times initially.. there's no change in the speed, its running at 987MHz. After several reboots, it is able to run at 1.83GHz again.
Shouldn't it be able to change speed as soon as I change between the 2 power management profiles? I verified with my friend's x60.. his changes immediately.. no reboot required.
Is there something wrong? I did update my bios.. v1.06.

it's called speed step technology because the speed of the processor goes up when you need it.
if i recall correctly, the only way you're going to get full speed all the time is if you plug it in.
i have to ask you, is the low speed affecting your work? i highly doubt it is, i just thinnk you're feeling self consious about the stolen megahurts.

If the profile changes, the clock speed should also change accordingly.
Unless...
You are having a problem with the Power Manager (which is possible) where it doesn' initialize the settings. When you switch profiles does it, assuming that it is set to do so, dim the screen when you go to the mobile profile then back to the AC line profile?

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

It doesn't really affect my work.. but I'm just worried that this might lead to a chain of problems in future.devilsrejection wrote:it's called speed step technology because the speed of the processor goes up when you need it.

The screen does change between the preset levels of brightness when I switch from "Max Battery" and "Max Performance". Just that the clock speed remains unchanged.christopher_wolf wrote:If the profile changes, the clock speed should also change accordingly.

The 2 profiles have different levels of processor speed already preset.
Try using Mobile Meter -- it graphs your CPU speed and can measure it by a couple of different methods:

I've been using MobileMeter on my X31 and it works very well: when I use the "High System Performance", it shows 1.4Ghz as the CPU speed; when I switch to a custom profile (bright LCD, slow CPU), it shows 600Mhz as the CPU speed. I installed MobileMeter on my brand-new X60s, but it always display the same (maximum) speed, regardless of what profile I'm using. Is MobileMeter able to display the actual speed on an X60s, or am I missing something?boofoo wrote:Try using Mobile Meter -- it graphs your CPU speed and can measure it by a couple of different methods:

There are in fact four "methods to get the frequency": 1) From OS, 2) From Register (Transmeta), 3) Measure Actual and 4) From Driver (WinXP). On my system, all are greyed out except "Measure Actual". So there's nothing I can try hereboofoo wrote:But in the Mobile Meter options there are 3 different settings for how it calculates CPU speed; have you tried all 3?
Interestingly enough, I appear to have a problem with SpeedStep: PRPCUI.EXE doesn't show up in Task Manager and everything is greyed out in the "Intel SpeedStep(R) technology" tab of "Power Options".

I was talking about my W2K setup: the SpeedStep applet (PRPCUI.EXE/.DLL) is for W2K only, SpeedStep support is supposed to be built-in in XP.domi wrote:There are in fact four "methods to get the frequency": 1) From OS, 2) From Register (Transmeta), 3) Measure Actual and 4) From Driver (WinXP). When booting into XP, only "From Register (Transmeta)" was greyed out. When using "From OS" or "From Driver (WinXP)", I did see changes in the frequency displayed by MobileMeter (from 1.7GHz to 1.0GHz).
So it looks like I'm not able to get the W2K SpeedStep applet working so far...
