reinstalling stuff
reinstalling stuff
Hey all,
I just formatted my t42 2378-DUU, and I have two issues with getting stuff to work:
1. How do I get the volume up/volume down/access IBM, etc., buttons to work on my keyboard?
2. In my device manager, I see that there's an "SM Bus Controller" that doesn't have a driver. Some help there?
Thanks in advance,
Jason

You don't just format a T4x, you do an F11 recovery, or else you obtain and use the recovery CD's. If you just formatted, you lost everything you are looking for, and now have to figure it out from the web site.
I have read most of the stuff in here about formatting IBM laptops, and no one has really supplied a decent recent to format a new Laptop and get rid of the IBM stuff. It works, it doesn't use a lot of resources, and it doesn't take much space. I have all the Preload stuff working, the Predesktop area in place, all of Windows XP and copious tools plus 5 Virtual Machines ranging in size to 4 Gb. I still have 28 Gb free and 450Mb of memory free. What is gained?

jaynyls, you need a few things ..
1. You can get all the drivers and utilities separately at:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-55386
Or, you can download multiple files at once:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... date=false
Or, you can try the IBM Software Installer which should do it for you:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4ZKMCT
2. You need the Intel chipset support:
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46058
I, too, was going to reinstall XP. But like jdhurst, I realized that there didnt appear to be any gain from doing so. No harm either, though, so I wouldn't worry about that.
Also, you should check out the FAQ's here. You'll probably find answeres to some other things you might want to know:

JD, do not forget though that some of us have/want to use other OS than the one our Thinkpad came with... I have around 7 XP licences I don't use, since all my machines dual-boot win2k pro and gentoo...jdhurst wrote:You don't just format a T4x, you do an F11 recovery, or else you obtain and use the recovery CD's. Most would have all the stuff they needed BEFORE they formatted their drive. A little preplanning would make things much quicker to get back up and running.
