Restore CDs Installation Question

#1 Post by djpharoah » Sat Jul 29, 2006 12:48 pm

Hi everyone. I use linux and have windows xp on the same hdd just for gaming on my T41p.

However I cant boot into windows since I get "boot sector has invalid signature". Thus I think its time to reinstall windows.

Now here is the dilema. I have the original restore cds. However those restore cds take over the entire harddrive formating everything in its path. I dont want that since I have my linux setup on the same drive.

Is there a way to tell the IBM restore cds to format and install to a certain partition? Or is there a way I can make a custom windows xp installation cd/dvd with all the drivers extracted from my restore cds?

thanks

Do any of the F8 boot options work? Can you get that far? Have you already blown away the hidden restore partition?

If you haven't already reinstalled Windows, boot up from a Windows install CD (not the IBM Product Recovery Discs), choose Recovery Console, then try the command fixboot C: (or whatever drive Windows is installed on). There is another command called fixmbr that may work. Go to Windows Help and Support on a Windows system and type fixboot or fixmbr in the search box for more info.

There is also "checkdsk /r", it fixes a lot of problems.
