T30 Retrofits to address 2nd memory slot problem

#1 Post by kchung » Fri Aug 13, 2004 5:08 pm

I don't know if this has been posted before, but the IBM T30 has a retrofit/repair "WCA" to address a problem laptop where the second DIMM slot will all of sudden (and permanently) disappear (not be accessible).

There are three related WCAs on this problem in which, when completed, will result in a modification to the motherboard (sorry I don't have details what), a new RAM bay cover door, and a small metal flange added to the hard drive bay door.

If you have on-site support you can call in to have your system fixed on-site, otherwise you'll have to ship it to the depot. The WCA's are in force to June 30, 2005, so I suspect that if you don't get it done by then, you'll have to pay for it or you're out of luck.

How do you know if your T30 has been retrofitted? The most obvious change will be the RAM Dimm cover door. The old version is totally flat. The replacement has been modified such that it is "bumped out" so that "more air can flow over the dimms". The old hard drive access door will just have the plastic tab holding the screw in place (which by the way is VERY fragile - if you over tighten the screw, it WILL snap!). The new one has a metal flange attached to a small "riser" that hooks into the hard drive access cover sothat the screw goes through the riser underneath the plastic tab.
