t42 and 7200rpm> will it work?

#1 Post by Ashiaveli » Mon Jul 31, 2006 6:49 pm

Hi,

I was looking at upgrading my harddrive and was wondering if a 7200rpm harddrive is compatible with my t42.

1.7M, 1gig ram, 32mb mobility (boo).

thanks.

Yes, as long as it is a PATA 2.5" laptop form factor (~9mm height), it will work; why wouldn't a 7200RPM HDD be compatible with a T42? :)

i get all my thinkpad and ibm stuff thru my gf's dad who works with an ibm seller and he said it may be an issue. guess not. they're really expensive tho.. i want an 80gig and i dunno if its justified to pay double for 7200 rpm over 5400.

i just bought another stick of 512mb ram. if i got a new harddrive i'd have to get an external closure for my old one too.. guess i'll wait.

thanks guys.

I would wait and see what the extra 512MB will net you in performance gains. It is more cost-effective to upgrade the memory for better performance as opposed to the HDD. The difference, depending on what you do, may or may not be all that evident at first glance. :)

i always have rainlender, styler, utorrent and firefox going. i almost always have a movie playing too.

with 1gig of ram i wont have to worry about slow downs and firefox taking 30 seconds to load.

I have 1GB of RAM too and I can get Firefox to take 30+ seconds to load; the only way I enjoy it, or any other browser for that matter, is to cut down on all extensions, flush the cache periodically, and not add anything extra. :)

Double??!! It's $115. And anyone who has a 7200RPM drive will tell you that the difference in speed compared to 5400RPM or 4200RPM is palpable. The price differential is so modest that it makes no sense to consider anything else. See here:

Heat issues?

#10 Post by migel628 » Tue Aug 01, 2006 12:44 am

I was actually thinking of going w/ a 100GB 7200rpm HDD in my T42, but I'm a little concerned about heat issues. Has anyone had any experience w/ this?

I have tried 100GB 7200RPM Hitachis in my T43 and other T4X Series Thinkpads with little to know significant rise in heat; I don't know why it would present a serious case for a temperature increase either. 1°C-2°C *Max* increase, if at all. :)

Just like Christopher says (above): No heat issues whatsoever with Hitachi 100GB/7200RPM drives.

The HD cloning kits are very inexpensive.. I got one off eBay for $12 USD shipped, it is really just a USB to laptop HD plug and the drive fits into a sleeve for looks.. It's the easiest way to clone a HD or add one for additional storage.

Check this link for USB laptop HD kits:

I say go for the 100GB 7200RPM either the: Seagate Momentus 7200.1 or Hitachi 7k100 100GB.

Then by an Ultrabay Slim 2nd HDD Adaptor, and put your old hard drive (Provided it is <= 9.5mm height and is 2.5'' form factor).

Ok, so there is no difference in heat. But what about the major concerns: Noise and power consumption? A higher RPM drive should make more noise and use more power, right?

We keep going over these issues time and again. I have been using a 7200-rpm in my T41 since it began (2003). The money was worth it - in spades. There is no extra heat that I can perceive. It is not louder that I can perceive than a 5400-rpm drive. I cannot say about power except that I get adequate battery life. My battery is old now, but having a fast drive doesn't appear to present a problem.

I had a spare 4200-rpm drive once. That drive was just barely noticeably smoother and quieter than a 5400-rpm drive or a 7200-rpm drive, but then, I would not regress to such a slow drive.

So, with a 7200-rpm drive, no issues for me.

hahah there are way too many threads on higher rpm and sound\power.

anyways i just put in the other 512mb (was so easy..literally took 10 seconds) and my t42 noticably responds quicker.

as for a new harddrive, im gonna have to wait till i save up some money. i wanna get a 7200 so i dont have to upgrade again.

thanks again guys.

Newegg ships to Canada.

If you update your profile with your location, we won't have to guess where you are when making suggestions as to where to purchase things.

I'm very saddened to read that. Seems Newegg.com has joined zipzoomfly.com in no longer offering shipment to CA.

Perhaps some of our Canadian forum members will have a "local" source for a HD for you.

Or, check the FS Forum here for HD offerings from Brent, I'm fairly certain he'd ship one to the 51st state.

Recently purchased a Hitachi 7K100 100 GB drive from Newegg for $139.99 after $10 instant rebate and $5 three day shipping. Dozens of them on eBay in the $150-170 range but shipping usually runs $20 plus. Newegg was the best deal I could fine.

Well, in their defense, I've heard via back-channel that the reason for the decision by Newegg and Zipzoom to no longer ship overseas or to CA is because of pressure placed on them by manufacturers.

Apparently their sales agreements with providers covers the US only.

It's still dumb. Very poor business practice (bordering on sheer ignorance) because there is no reason for it. Refusing good sales is one road to oblivion (even if it is the manufacturer). .... JD Hurst

I hear you John, but I sincerely doubt that the Canadian retailers of these products, at higher prices but probably the same profit margins, would agree with you.
