T22 windows can not shutt it down
Hi everyone here
After a long search on the forum I decided finally to ask for help.
T22 / 900Mhz / 256 RAM / 30GB / Win XP Pro / Latest BIOS version from IBM site, all latest updates from Windows and IBM /
What's happening : when I go for normal shut down (Start Button and TurnOff ) I can see how windows is closing all programs and saving my settings an then the last action is "Windows is shutting down" and this sign stays forever and the only thing I can do is to hold the power button in order to shut it down. I reinstall the WindowsXP and even tried Win2000 but it's still the same. What else, I switched from wireless connection to wired. Generally works great but the only unusual thing is when I start it and periodically during the normal operation I hear the "screaming" noise from the front left side.
Any other suggestions for more troubleshooting on this will be highly appreciated
Regards,

That sounds like a software(program) problem.
When it says Windows is shutting down, for the long time, do you see the hard drive light blinking or is it off? If it continues to blink while is stays on the shutdown screen, there is something thats still open.. the OS is still writing to the disk. If the HD light stays off, then there is a problem... Does it take a long time to shutdown in Safe Mode?
Before you shut down, run scandisk (check for errors) on each partition. You will prob have to shutdown and restart to run scandisk, but do it anyway. You may have to start up in Safe Mode(always better) then select Scan for errors. You will have to restart for it to scan anyway.
Try unloading your MSConfig list (uncheck everything) and restart. Try shutdown.. does it shutdown quickly or hang up again? If it shuts off like it is supposed to (quickly), go back into MSConfig and check the box on the first item, shutdown, restart, shutdown again, does it shut off quickly? Repeat for each MSConfig item and see which one hangs up the shutdown process.
To check if it's hardware related, remove everything from the laptop... memory, CD/DVD, network card, modem, etc, leaving one stick of memory and the HD in. Start up, and once Windows is done loading, shutdown.. does it still hang on shutdown? If no, then add one peice of hardware(more memory, or CD/DVD) restart, shutdown... does the problem return? Continue with each piece until the problem returns, then take out that piece... that is the culprit. If it hangs up with no extra hardware pieces, and you ruled out software(drivers) the remaining hardware is the motherboard or video.

Good news
Stripping out the devices from device manager discover the problem and it turns out to be defected Agere Win Modem which I'm not using anyway and I can live without it
Thank you very very much for all your help
I would buy you a drink with a pleasure if you happen to come in Vancouver
Cheers
