Hey all, im a very active member of a European car forum, as you can guess what I drive. Any German car fans here? I bought my '01 A4qt because I go to school in the Berkshires and AWD comes in quite handy in the hills. It is stock for now, for I have little money for mods, unfortuntaly. Anyone care to share what car(s) you drive on a daily basis/weekend ride?

1984 300ZX with Digital Readouts; really great car with awesome handling. Fun in the hills around here too, if one has enough nerves of steel and can control some oversteer.

I don't have any European cars but I do have an '84 Pontiac Fiero with a 300 HP 350ci (5.7l) Chevrolet V8 that I drive a lot and I have a '69 Pontiac GTO 400ci (6.6l) 4speed that I need to get finished so I can drive it again. It has been about 15 years since I drove it on a daily basis.

I am. I'm in love with the RX-7, all years. I got a job this year just to save up money for an FC3S (86-91) RX-7 but my parents broke the news to me, half way through the summer, that I can't get one because of insurance. In MN, its required to have insurance when you drive. So I spent my money on a Thinkpad. Still, I really wish I had a car.

Daily driver is a truck. But for those times when the open road beckons:

Old Zoomer - MB 450SEL 6.9. (In storage, again.)

New Zoomer - MB E500.

Many others too numerous to mention.

But I still miss my Audi 5000 Turbo Quattro!

That is a good one. Nice to know. I cannot afford a BMW now but I guess I do not want to get one even if I can.

I drive a Ford Taurus 97. Pretty powerful although not good on gas. When you have kids, nothing weighs more than safety. Japanese cars are just not safe enough, to my knowledge.

I don't have a car yet but I am probably going to be getting one somewhere this year (and it's going to be my first car and I am not going to get a European car but) I am planning to get a Honda Accord Hybrid or maybe even a Honda Odyssey.

i just junked an 84 pontiac fiero..
it was purchased new by my wife in 84..
and driven until the iron duke engine suffered a meltdown..
it was a very nice little car that would corner like it was on rails as long as the road surface was smooth..

my "driver" is a '97 SL600..
VERY fast and not all that much of a guzzler..

"her" "driver", since the crash in 2004 (see billmorrow.com), is my old '92 lexus SC400..
a VERY nice car..
well built and runs like a champ..

i also have a 98 (i think) ford F450 (i think) dually flatbed with a huge turbocharged diesel..

and a ford F350 DUMP truck of indeterminate age (probably an 87 or so).. used for taking cuttings to the front of the property for the cuttings pickup..
this is a florida thing i suppose..

and last but not the least, a 1985 Aston Martin Lagonda 4 door sedan..
12k miles..
this is my toy but might be for sale, soon..
along with the parts car..

OH, there is also a GEHL Skid Steer Loader i use around the place to move heavy stuff.. dirt, RR Ties, and the occasional dead car (see fiero above) around..
this also works good to protect the generator when hurricanes blow in..

many of these cars were used when i got them and none were crashed..
most were great fun to own and drive..
the stars were the XKE's, the Sliver Spur and all those mercedes cars..
the 1953 Cadillac Convert. was bought for $200 out of a wrecking yard in daly city and i drove that car for over a year and traded it in on the olds 88..

the Jag Mk IV was memorable..
the corvette was stolen two times.. never recovered the second time..
some of these cars were sold for more than i paid..
the Rolls, the 280SE 3.5, the first 450SL, the 66 Jag XKE, the 41 Ford (Paid $50 for it, drive it for a year and sold it for $100)

theres more but it think the boredom level is probably getting to a critical level among the readers..

it was a VERY good year..

and i must say that taking a rolls royce into the cloverleaf from hwy 85 to 237 in mt. view at the speed i was accustomed to using when driving the 450SL produced an exciting 5 seconds while i nursed 3 tons of car in what was ALMOST an unscheduled excursion into the brush on the outside of the bend..

for non cadillac fans its a bit of a piece..but i absolutely love them. i'm one of the more wealthy members on the board- i drive an '89 chevy corsica with 43K miles. i assume by 1986 avalon you meant '96...?

... a 94 Trans Am... it's ill-tempered & overpowered... quite unforgiving of driver error, yet a total blast to drive. I love the thing. It's modified and taken to the track a few times each year, but is still a daily driver.

I had two Mazda Rx7's while i was in the Army "86" and "81" if I remember correctly, those little rotary engines would wind out nice, they were chick magnents to, (definate bonus).

When I got to Ft Bragg this was the first things I bought with my newfound PFC wealth and jump pay, these things were seriously dangerous fast, I had the 74 model (pictured is the 72):

I still love every bit of this car besides the crappy gas mileage.

Why is the gas mileage so bad on that Wankel engines? I figure it would be pretty good? I also wonder if Mazda will keep that around for the next generation RX. I like how that car is very well priced new.

Because the operators can't keep their foot out of it!!!

Besides, that little 1.3L spinner in the RX8 is doing a lot of work, especially when you stop to consider that other builders need 3L, 4L and even 5L engines to keep up with it.

I had a 1970 NSU Ro 80 for a while when I lived in EU. For only having a 995cc engine, that thing went like a raped ape!

I replaced it in 1972 with a 170HP variant of the Citroen SM.

Well they claim the car gets ~20-22 miles per gallon but thousands of RX8 owners report that they are only getting ~15-18 miles per gallon--mine is one of those getting ~15mpg.

And just like every other car, if you drive it hard and fast (how can you resist driving fast in the RX8), you get way less mpg.

The only other thing I can complain about the RX8 is its oil usage:

OK, technical bit here. In a typical piston engine, the oily bits that go round are separated from the bits that go bang. The things that do the separating are the piston rings, and this is why normal engines (i.e, ones that aren't knackered) don't use much oil.

Wankel engines aren't like this. The pistons themselves rotate, and the oily bits cannot be effectively separated from the bits that go bang. The RX8 has what's known as a "total loss" oil system : it continually drips oil into the engine, and the oil gets used up at the rate of about a pint every 1000 miles or so. The upshot of this is that you have to watch the oil like a hawk, because you can run dry, and running a 9000 rpm engine dry of oil would be.... unpleasant.

Other than that, I love the car to death--lots of power, smoothly delivered with some of the best handeling I've experienced. Plus the "freestyle" doors make life easier...

I don't understand why Mazda would keep that motor around for another cycle because of the lack of durability on the old RX 7 motor. Sure 8,000rpm is fun and all, but ill take a piston motor anyday.

The longevity of the rotaries has increased exponentially.

The death knell for the Ro 80 was the fact that the rotor seals in the early engines wore out as early as 15K miles and required replacement.

wow thats a pretty slick setup! the center console remineds me of my 3000GT with all the gadgets there. whats it got for a motor/suspention?
