Take a look at these threads;

Technically, it might; yet there have also been cases where IBM simply replaced the board with no questions asked if it needed it, even after a CPU upgrade was performed.

Mine is a 100GB HDD samsung and there is a sound like something is braking or stopping. I find it okay as long as it is not scratching sound. :-)

I'd like to think Lenovo would honour a warranty even if the Thinkpad is customised slightly, afterall installing a new HDD and installing a new CPu aren't that far apart. In they are still user modification and generally break the warranty.

Replacing a CPU requires some disassembly of the machine, replacing a HD requires no disassembly, they're nothing alike at all!

Now you're contradicting yourself.

No, I mean that companies seem to follow two policies. I didn't really express myself very well, granted. But either a company allows you to modify a machine in some or all respects or they don't. At least that has been my experience with electronic goods so far.

I guess a laptop is different, but they could say that if it isn't a HDD that they sell and certify for use then it voids the warranty.

CPU upgrades are a significant upgrade that require a lot more time and labour. However my point is that they are both modifications.

In my case after the cpu,motherboard,lcd,hd,ram,fan,bluetooth upgrades my new mobo after a month and a half died and IBM replace it with the same mobo 128mb that i have upgraded, i supposed it depends how "pro company" the tech is. 8)

If you do a CPU upgrade and subsequently have a problem that requires warranty service, just reinstall the old CPU.
A CPU upgrade on a T4x doesn't require the breaking of any seals -- there's no real way to tell that it's been done (or un-done).
