T-22 having is own wills...Need help please.

#1 Post by RallyMaster » Thu Aug 03, 2006 3:54 am

Hello,
I`m new here and I must say this is one of the best forums I`ve ever been to.

Anyhow, I`ve just got as a gift this T-22 laptop, and I`m starting to understang why I got it as a gift.
I`m having problems to boot it up, sometimes it does boot up but most of the times it just dont. And even if he gets up he gets stuck at windows logon at the start.

From things I`ve read here I understood there might be some causes to these things. I`ve already gave the computer to some lab and I`ve asked them to fix it, They didnt do a thing because when they had the computer everything worked fine, so they just cleaned it (Anyway thats what they said...)

I need help guys, I need to know your opinion because I`m kind of new in the laptop stuff and I dont know what to do.

BTW, this is a T-22 2647-8EG, And I`ve already download all new updateds from the IBM site. The Comp Running on Win XP.

I forgot one more importent thing...The comp is getting hot ! sometimes it reach to 70 Celcusius Dgree... but it does not close itself...

A Big THANKS in advance !!
Good Day.

Sounds like a hardware defect. Yet there's a chance something is wrong with the software. Try a clean Windows reinstall.
If that doesn't fix it, try the "usual procedure" which is explained in a lot of "my computer freezes" postings here. Memory, in my opinion, is the most common cause of "sudden freeze" issues. Try testing that.

From what I read it's within tolerance with the T2x series. Some of the other people here know more about it.

I read you are in Israel. Be on the safe side now!

Try removing all the removable hardware..CD ROM,PCMCIA cards,etc...Then boot...

If you still have problems and have 2 RAM stickis in the machine try removing one,and boot...If the problem is still there swap RAM sticks and try again..

If you only have one stick of RAM beg, borrow or buy another stick and try that...More times then not booting problems lead to a bad stick of RAM...

1 T23 1.13 Mhz..256 RAM...
1 600e that now a 600x(500Mhz) with 256 RAM
1 600x(500 Mhz) with 327 Ram
1 600x upgraded to 600Mhz with 256 RAM

There's a good chance that the CPU is not seated correctly on its socket. Some T23s had this sort of problem because of thermal cycling (expansion and contraction of the metal parts in and around the CPU), which caused the CPU's connection to the socket to lose integrity.

I had this problem with a T23. I took out the CPU, reseated it, and applied some Arctic Silver. It helped somewhat, but I continued having problems. Then I set the CPU to always run at low speed, and never had any problems after that. I have a CPU laying around which I will put in this computer one of this days to see if I can completely solve the problem and run the CPU on adaptive (the way it's meant to run).

Thanks for the help guys..

Where can I find how to reseat the CPU, is this is something I can do or I need to take to a lab ?

I`ll try doing the stuff with ejecting the CD and the memory first...

It's not bad if you follow the instructions in the manual. Just make sure to be very organized and label each group of screws (there's a bunch of them), so that you know where they go when you are putting your Thinkpad together. It can be a very frustrating experience if you don't do that. :D
