Gaming on T41p - Feelin HOT HOT HOT!
Hey everybody.
Just finished playing some NFSU2 and noticed that Mobile Meter had my little 1.5GHz CPU at 87C!! I use TPFANCONTROL to set my smart fan choices, but above 70 I let the bios take over.
Now having something run that hot just doesnt feel right. When I installed the cpu, I used a very thin layer of AS5 and let it cure for a couple of days before gaming.
My question is this: I know the cpu will get hot because due to the T4x heatsink it cant dissipate as much heat as a normal heatsink - which would have circular heat pipes instead of flattened ones. The heatsink in my T41p also has to cool the firegl t2.
Is it safe to have my cpu running at those temps? What if I plan on gaming for an hour? Am I screwing my cpu?? I know in the desktop world I have pretty much fried my cpu - but in the laptop world have I? My T20s P3@700 used to run at 85C when compiling in linux.
Thanks for any advice etc.

Yes. Pretty sure. However tonight I will drop in a normal 1.5GHz dothan that I got from brentpresley. What makes you think otherwise? the temps?ParzanM wrote:are you sure you got a LV cpu?Just finished playing some NFSU2 and noticed that Mobile Meter had my little 1.5GHz CPU at 87C!! ye isnt that a bit high being a low voltage. See what temps you get with the normal 1.5Ghz and post them..[/b]

Ok in with a 1.4GHz i found lying around. Temps are still around ~85C.ParzanM wrote:Yes. Pretty sure. However tonight I will drop in a normal 1.5GHz dothan that I got from brentpresley. What makes you think otherwise? the temps?

Heat Issue
When playing Counter Strike Source or Guildwars on my T43, the temperatures get up into the low 70C. In order to lower the temperature, I have been recently using an Antec laptop cooling pad.
This seems to work very well. I picked mine up a microcenter.
Good Luck!

Thanks - I seem to have found some luck in undervolting with NHC.
My max temps are now around 69C

You can use mobile meter to check that.ParzanM wrote:how do you check your gpu and cpu temps?

Cuz, It will automatically detect your temp sensor for cpu/harddrive. All you have to do is set it up to start at startup.ParzanM wrote:thanks will it only check it or would i have to modify something in order to get the temps?
Update: My 1.5GHz is running at a very low voltages - going to burn it in for 6 hrs tonight to make sure its stable. Last I checked with the highest multiplier and 100% cpu usage, I was getting like 65C which is awesome considering I was getting 85C before. But that could also be cuz of the ati card adding some heat..

What is the voltage you have set for 1.5GHz? On my 1.7GHz machine, with the 17x voltage lowered to 1.292V, the CPU temperature never goes above low 70s C. Eighty-seven C for a 1.5GHz CPU is high.
FYI, the Pentium M series CPUs have a maximum operating temperature of 100C, and the internal circuitry "throttles" its performance by slowing down the internal clock once it hits 85C or 90C, so you will not melt the chip. Regardless, excessive heat is never a good thing.
I have also noticed that the presence of large amounts of dust can have a large impact on the internal temperature of the machine. Since yours is a T41p, it is probably at least two years old. If you have not done so, brush away the dust that have collected inside the machine thoroughly, especially those at the fan's outlet.

Thanks for the advice. My T41p may be two years old - but Im not the original owner. So when I built it I cleaned it ou anally - made sure no dust or crap was in there.keithh wrote:What is the voltage you have set for 1.5GHz? However I have a feeling that I put a smidge too much arctic silver and might lap the heatsink base a bit since its all scratched up.
Then once thats done - will undervolt it using NHC. Btw I find Intel over-volts their cpus like nuts. However Im saying that without running a cpu burn in software.
Will post back tonight.

Update:
First I reseated my cpu with a cleaner coat of arctic silver 5. Then I undervolted my 1.5Ghz and burned it in for 6hrs to make sur it was ultra stable.
Max temp before undervolting: 89C
Max temp after undervolting: 59C
I used NHC, Prime95 and HOT CPU Burn IN to test my cpu. Will post voltages later

HI, I hope people could help me out.
I just bought 1 week ago a brand new T42P with 1GB RAM & FireGL 128MB video card.
The problem I have is that I've installed NFS Most Wanted, and after 2-3 minutes the game completely freezes as so the laptop, so I need to press the Power Button to shut down the laptop.
I was wondering if this is normal in this game, or the FireGL is simply not meant to handle that kind of games.
I haven't had the time to test any other games, except the older Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed with the same results.
Any ideas??
Motherboard defective, GPU overheating ??
Also, the Actic Silver 5 could help decrease my CPU temp?

Actually the fireGl is pretty capable of gaming. It basically is a 9600P.
However you might want to look at the results in the thread you started as this thread has been solved.
