That's a matter of opinion, and I don't know if "everyone" desires it. I have not seen anything conclusive that proves that one card is superior to the other, although you are correct that the anecdotal reports seem to favor the Atheros-based card. It works well; I don't think you will be disappointed by it.

A lot of people here seem to favour Atheros and have reported that after switching from the Intel to the Atheros they are getting much stronger signals.

I was thinking too of replacing the Intel 3945 that came in stock with my 2623 D6U, but I wanted first to replace my SMC Wifi Router which was starting to go 'South'. I got a a new Netgear router (39 USD) and now my Intel card gets much stronger signal... so I think I'll stick for a while to this current setup. When IBM will offer an internal wifi N card with Mimo, I'll throw that in the TP and upgrade my router too to get the 108 bit rate. The N routers and cards are still very pricey -- starting at 129 USD for the router and 99 USD for an external card with Linksys.
