R52 battery would not charge after a coke spill - HELP!!

#1 Post by budugu » Fri Aug 04, 2006 3:06 pm

I recently had a coke spill on my R52. And the computer shut off immediately. After which i cleaned the whole computer, literally piece by piece. Every is fine except for the battery.

1) the battery would not charge even though the computer recognizes that the power connector is plugged in. THe little charge symbol shows up.

2) i have checked the battery on another laptop and the battery is fine.

3) the computer runs fine on just the power ... battery removed

4) computer works fine on just the battery.

5) Even if i dock the computer on the docking station, the issue remains!

the battery light keeps flickering lightly.

Did any one face these issues before? what could have been the problem here? how do it find out where the issue is.

thanks a lot for help!

PS: some one told me that my 3yr warranty would be void if i report this. So i am hesitant to call IBM/Lenovo :(

it sounds like the dc circuit has been shorted out - i have seen it happen on another spillage. Unfortunately, it would take a new system board to resolve it if my suspicions are correct

you shouldn't void your warranty - only damage caused as a result of the spillage so this repair wouldn't be covered, you could try not telling them but it is normally fairly obvious when a sugary drink has been spilled

If he is particularily Handy with a soldering Iron... perhaps he could have a go at replacing the actual parts on the board rather than the entire board itself :P

Well my idea is to just clean the computer up (i just removed the motherboard, disks, every thing to the frame) and send it to lenovo and hope that they would not find sugar in there. I am ok with stripping the computer but soldering on the mobo is a little above and beyond me. I just cleaned all parts with distilled water yesterday, I am thinking of cleaning with 91% isopropyl alcohol to displace water and remove the streaking... what do you guys think?

IF my dc circuit is fried ... why is it able to use the battery? That is what is puzzling me. If i put it in for charging the battery drains of slowly. And BTW where is the DC circuit thingy on the motherboard? Again thanks a lot for your responses

I know one word posts are frowned upon - so this is no longer a one word post.
