Internal wireless issues

#1 Post by LacquerHead » Sat Aug 05, 2006 4:43 pm

My wireless comes on and off constantly, turning off to look for a signal and then quickly reconnecting. Dont know why it started, and my router works fine. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thanks.

On the Intel website are some new drivers (10.50). Whilst they don't work with Fn-F5 (power) or access connections, they seem to have significantly reduced wireless dodginess....

YMMV

Where on the intel site did you locate this driver set?

Thanks.

See

http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/w ... 010623.htm

Works great with Intel 3945ABG although remember
- Fn-F5 power control
- Access connections

didn't work for me

But since
- I have the "hard" switch at the front for wireless disable
- I'm now using the Intel wireless profile manager

it's no issue

So all this driver seems to be for is improving connectability of the internal wireless?

This happened to me when I had both the Windows driver and Access Connections trying to manage the wireless hardware at the same time. Make sure "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" is not checked in the Wireless Properties/Wireless Networks tab.

Go to the Control Panel and switch to the Classic View. Inside of "Network Connections" there should be a connection associated with your internal wireless card. Right click --> Properties --> Wireless Networks. The "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" checkbox will be the first thing there.

The earlier suggestion to make sure Windows is not trying to control the wireless is probably the answer. If you like the way Access Connections works, then I'd agree with that answer.

I'd like to recommend, though, that you uninstall Access Connections and use Windows only to control the wireless. Although Access Connections has some nice conveniences, I found in my current computer and my last Thinkpad that it was much more problematic than the Windows software. Also, for some reason the Windows wireless configuration function seems to take over and turn itself back on from time to time - I have never figured out why. Since it seems to work more reliably and smoothly for me, I just got rid of Access Connections.

In Add/Remove programs, just look for the 'Access Connections' software. Don't remove any wireless drivers - just the software. After reboot, try the connection and see if things work. If not, double-click the wireless icon in the system tray. If you were not connected to anything you will get the "select Wireless Networks" window, so you should click "Change Advanced Settings."

In either case, I would strongly suggest that you run your Thinkpad update software, as there is a fairly new wireless driver from Lenovo. I tend to have great luck using Thinkpad drivers rather than the hardware maker's - the Intel driver might work fine, but feel better about using Leonovo's.
