I want my screen goodies!

#1 Post by Alan Rose » Sun Aug 06, 2006 11:46 am

I'm having an experience similar to what BLKLBL was having back in late June, trying to send the video from my T22 (it's a 2648-4EU) out the S-video port to a TV, but the instructions for doing this (that is, the illustrations that appear on the Lenovo site http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... R-58625#s3) take me to Display Properties/Settings/Advanced where I'm supposed to click on the S3 Display tab, but I don't have one. The illustration shows a whole range of functions apparently described as "Screen Goodies". I don't have any screen goodies. Not a single goody.

(By the way, this dialog box tells me my display is "IBM ThinkPad 1024x768 TFT LCD panel on S3 Graphics Inc. SavageIX".)

Although I have found and installed what I thought were the correct video drivers for my machine (a file called vftpiy2k), I still don't have the video functionality I'm supposed to have.

Do I need to replace (upgrade) the hardware, or is there maybe a driver from S3 I could get?

Thank you very much for your time.

re screen goodies

hi there

okay first step is to attach lead to s out port then power up the laptop

the port needs to send and recieve a signal to trigger the settings.

it took me a couple of attempts to figure this out when i was mucking around with some backed up dvds to use the pc phrase.

so laptop powered off attach leads to s vid and tv power up go to settings/control panel/ display/ settings then the advanced tab and you should have about 9 tabs available go to s3display and the tv option should be ready to select if not already checked.

if you dont have all these tabs i suggest you need the right set of drivers pm me for a copy i got the correct ones from the ix savage pro english site a couple of years ago
running t23 and 2000 pro

good luck and happy goody playing
is it a bird? is it a plane? Nope its a rock solid never lets me down little black thinkpad.

I have a T22 also and plan to use it the same way, sending DVD's to a TV. I have not plugged a video out cable in yet but just checked my Display options and yes, I do have all those "goodies" described. I'm guessing the previous owner may have used this with a TV. I'm betting as soon as you hook up to the TV they will appear as Hoodo instructed. Good luck.

I've upgraded my T23 to Windows 7. Everything is working great except for the display settings. The weird part is I do get the screen goodies but only when I attach the second display, which by default goes to the VGA port in the back. The only problem is the screen goodies only show up for the display settings for the second display. And in the "S3Display" tab I have either a big red X or a circle and line over the TV depending on something. I haven't figure that out yet. When I had XP installed I remember using the Screen Goodies in the Primary display settings to activate the S-Video.

Image

I'm baffled as to why I have the screen goodies in the second display but not the primary. I have cycled through the Fn+F7 switch, which seems to go through 3 modes. One is definitely VGA out straight-up. The other two seem to be similar in that they both provide LCD display as primary but they are different since I was able to get one to be at 640x480 and the other as the full 1400x1050 I get on this 2467-5NU model. This comes in handy when I want to watch full screen video since at the full resolution the 16MB video memory doesn't always cut it, especially with flash video.

In the Primary Display Properties window S3 Graphics SuperSavage/IXC 1014 is what Windows calls the Adapter but it also calls it "S3 Graphics Compatible Display Adapter" in the Adapter String line for Adapter Information. The driver version is 6.13.10.1290.

I've tried restarting the laptop with the S-Video cable connected and the TV on but it doesn't seem to effect anything. I've also tried contacting S3 Graphics but have yet to hear from them. Really it just boggles my mind as to why I get the Screen Goodies in the secondary display but not the primary.

This is what I said to S3:
After I upgraded from XP to Win7 I lost the ability to use
the S-Video port on my T23 Thinkpad. I know that this machine
was never intended to run Windows 7 and that you will not be
producing new drivers for it but losing the s-video is really
the only drawback I've faced after the upgrade to Win7.
I tried using the automatic driver detect from the website
and what gets returned is rather confusing:
Recommended Driver: Graphics card does not recognize, please
check whether the correct card insertion slot or integrated
graphics.
I've also tried using Win7's "Connect to a Projector" feature
and the application fails to load. Which Microsoft suggests
to contact the manufacturer of the video card. I've also read
rumors of a "Windows 7 TV wizard" but have failed to find
such a wizard anywhere.
I'm frustrated but I believe there must be a way to get this
to work. The real issure I'm finding is that when I go to the
advanced display settings I no longer get the "S3 Screen
Goodies" tabs in the primary display dialog box like I used
to. However when I attach the second display, the "S3 Screen
Goodies" are in the dialog box for the second display! But in
the past, whenever I had activated the TV monitor in XP I
used the "Screen Goodies" from the Primary display, not the
Secondary to use the S-Video out but they're not there!
So the real question I have is this: Is there a way to
manually install the "S3 Screen goodies" software for the
tabs of the primary display advanced settings? I believe that
if I could restore these tabs to the Primary Display settings
I could get back the S-Video Out I love so much.
I'm still screwing around with this and I know there has to be a way to get this to work. I even see 3 monitors listed in Windows Device Manager. "Generic Non-PnP Monitor, Generic Television, & IBM ThinkPad 1400x1050 LCD Panel" I just need my Screen Goodies back!

GoodMayonnaise, I am surprised to see you have the S3 control panel on Windows 7 at all. I would have thought that the drivers are so old, and that Windows would be using the "generic adapter" fallback driver.

Did you try setting the primary display, the ThinkPad panel, to its lowest resolution? For me, running Windows XP on a T21, the S-Video out was always disabled unless I set the screen to VGA or SVGA. When the primary display was at a low resolution, then the DuoView option became available.

I've tried every resolution from 640 to 1400 and I still get nothing. I have a "generic television" in my monitors from the Device Manager but I can't seem to get it to show up in my display settings. Is generic television the S-Video? I'm still waiting to hear back from S3.

What does it mean when there is an X over the TV and what does it mean when there is a circle with a line through it?

Congrats on getting W7 to run on a T23.
However, your T23 does not get anywhere NEAR meeting the minimum requirements for W7, so you shouldn't really be surprised at it crashing.
Maybe the T23 ChroMetal driver might help out? http://www.pcpitstop.com/drivers/downlo ... DR%29.html

I'm not worried about the crash.
How do I install this driver? I don't see a Download button or anything. Does it expect me to download "Driver Alert"?

Well that thread didn't help but after some google searching for Chrometal 49 I found it on megaupload.com but before I could get it installed I had some problem with my power supply and now I can't turn my machine on. I think my AC adapter is broken. It still works with the battery but I'm saving the battery power for something really important until I get some way to power it up again.

If you want to help me you can read my post:

I've gotten my machine up and running again with a different AC Adapter. I really thought it was the motherboard but I'm not complaining.

Anyway, I found that ChroMetal49 driver and finally made a go at installing it but it didn't work.

Here's the link for the ChroMetal49 download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8TJ3GBVG

Last few lines of the install log for ChroMetal49:

Code: Select all

Description="%ChroMetal% (SuperSavage IXc SDR)	    = SuperSavage, PCI\VEN_5333&DEV_8C2E 		   ; Reference".
'DriverVer' is 06.14.04.9, 'DriverDate' is 11/19/2006.
Calling UpdateDriver... with PCI\VEN_5333&DEV_8C2E&SUBSYS_01FC1014&REV_05
   and INF path at C:\3D@Planet\ChroMetal49_2kxp\Legacy\S3G.inf
Started Timer window in background.
Doing copy logging.
   Finished with copy logging.

UpdateDriver forced install (PCI\VEN_5333&DEV_8C2E&SUBSYS_01FC1014&REV_05) failed->2.
UpdateDriver forced install (PCI\VEN_5333&DEV_8C2E&SUBSYS_01FC1014&REV_05) failed->2.
UpdateDriver failed, returned 2. Cannot install.
DestroyTimerWindow OK, but no timer dialog action occurred.
-> Setup was unable to complete the installation. Check the progress log in your Windows directory for more details.
I'm tempted to uninstall the current driver and try again. I'm not sure if the reason the driver failed was because of an incompatibility with windows 7 or because this driver is older than the current one.

I'm still on the case though.
