#1 Post by OxideNOS » Sun Aug 06, 2006 4:10 pm

Just got my thinkpad z60m and it takes too long to load everything. I decided to start from scratch by clean installing windows xp professional. But the problem is that z60m didn't came with Xp prof. sp2 cd. so how do i clean install.. is it built in to the system? if yes, how do i format it?

You can buy the install cd's when you purchase a thinkpad. Or you can order them afterwards. I don't have a link for that though - but I'm sure you can just call them up.

I think most of us just use a different copy of XP Pro - one without anything "extra". Just make sure to have all the drivers and whatnot handy:

There are guides for doing this in the Windows forum (there is a sticky thread):

BTW, if you don't have one, legal copies of XP are pretty cheap on ebay now.

Just uninstall what you don't use. Result will be the same than re-installing from scratch plus you're sure all tp sw are installed correctly. Plus it's easy to reproduce from the ibm install coming in the hidden partition. No, really, I don't see any advantage to install another version of xp.

Uninstall what you don't use. I don't know where people are getting the idea that the preload is to blame for everything being slow. I still have mine, with the exception of the Retail Symantec AV< and I have boot times under 30 seconds and everything else is *instantaneous*.

Technically, you are supposed to use the version of Windows that comes with it and matches the COA on the bottom of the Thinkpad if it came with Windows to start with. :)

+1
I absolutely agree with that. Just uninstall what you don't use. The system will *not* be slower, and IBM knows better than you how to install/configure everything. Plus doing that with a standalone CD makes you lose benefits of hidden partition + it's an overcost as you need to buy another license. Reformatting and starting from scratch is a real beginner practice ;)

i have generally done a clean install in the past but seeing that most are recommending to uninstall (mainly think vantage software) what i'm not using i had a question regarding it.

if for some reason i want something i uninstalled back (from the factory preload), is there a way to retrieve? does system restore bring it back?

If you uninstalled it and, at some point later on down the line, want it back then you can run either System Update 2 or Software Installer and it will check/download the package for the software you uninstalled and ask you if you want to install it.

No need for a System Restore, that would be a little too drastic. :)

No problem; it usually downloads it to a local folder under it's directory or the root directory...after which you can safely clean them up if you want to recover some more space. :)

It should be noted that unless someone knows a trick to it, uninstalling IBM programs doesn't free up all that much space on the hdd which is what I was going for when I reformated my machine. If there is a trick, maybe it should be posted here.

I should say that installing XP SP2 fresh with the HDD wiped out is the best way to go. My T42p runs like hell contrary to the stock XP SP2

To delete or not to delete? That is the question!

This is my first post the thinkpads forum so... Hello everyone :D .

A couple of days ago I wanted to clean up the hard disk on my t42 a little. Since the laptop hasn't been formated and own it for 1.5 year and since there are a few gigs of software that I am not sure if they are in use, I thought that it would be a good idea to wipe out everything and reinstall. I already had the restore disks, so I backed my files up and went on.

The result was the same as before: a lot of stuff installed in an ugly way on my hard disk (in C:\ instead of C:\Program Files). On the 40GB of total space (actually it's 34 approx. due the service partition) the 3.5 gigs of unknown stuff is quite important for me.

I would like to ask the following: is it OK to just delete these directories from my laptop or will I cause trouble?
  • DRIVERS
    I386
    IBMSHARE
    IBMTOOLS
    IBMWORK
    icons
    SUPPORT
    VALUEADD
Thanks in advance. :)
