try to update serial number: eeprom write protected?

I finally got the HMD version 1.74 which should work with X41. I burned the CD from the floppy.

BUT, when I try to update the serial number, it says

EEPROM is write protected. Please power off and on, then try to press ESC key when IBM logo is displayed

I know there is something like the ESC trick. But when I press the ESC key, the system automatically go to diagnostic mode.

Anybody knows how to solve this problem? Thanks.
