External monitor problems

I want to be able to close the lid of my laptop and keep the external display active, becoming the primary monitor... not just an extention of the lcd. Every time i close the laptop the external monitor shuts off, and I have no idea how to fix it. I have it set to Do nothing in power options when the lid is closed.

Any Ideas?

Is the laptop going into standby when you close the lid? If so, you'll want to change that first.

Go into power options to the Advanced tab and where it says "When I close the lid of my portable computer:" set it to "Do nothing"

No it's not going into standby, if that were the case i'd be prompted for a password or fingerprint. The monitor is just turing off and saying no signal. If I open the lid of the laptop the screen comes right back on.
