Help with dsl modem?
I dont know if this is the right place or not to post this, but I need help finding a modem to work with my SBC YAHOO DSL. I have their 2wire portal right now and its pretty much a piece of garbage. So all I want is a wired basic DSL modem and I will supply the wireless router of my own wishes. What should I look for and is there any ones in particular I should get or what brands are decent. Thanks in advance for all your help.

I've been using PacBell (aka SBC Yahoo, aka ATT Yahoo) DSL service almost since it became available in my area; about nine years now I believe. They provided me with a Westell WireSpeed modem exactly like this one (model B90-36R516):
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0018008623
Has been on 24/7 (except for the occasional California rolling blackout) and has not given me any major problems. Okay, there has been several times when I have needed to power-cycle it (maybe four times a year). But I don't think that it's the cause of my connection problems. The flooding underground junction box across the street is another matter...
As far as what to look for... Westell seems to make a simple box called the LiteLine. You can find it on their site at:
http://www.westell.com/pages/index.jsp
It seems like most companies are loading up their modems with all sorts of bells & whistles like wireless and firewalls. You can also poke around this site for more info on broadband and the equipment used:
http://www.dslreports.com (aka broadbandreports.com)
And you're right, this probably belongs under the General Hardware/Software conference.
(Oh, never mind... it's moved to Off Topic Stuff)

Uh... since you mentioned that you were looking for a DSL modem, and because I am now wondering if/when my Westell is going to give out, I'm also going to be lurking around eBay for the same modem. Hope I don't bump into you (or your bidding!). If in doubt, PM me and I'll let you know which ones I'm planning on sniping.

And also, I have notcied that there seems to be two different models being offered on eBay: a "B90" or a "C90". Not sure what the differences are but checking the westell.com site, only models they reference as discontinued are 36R516 (no B90 or C90 in front of the model number). In short, I would check with your local provider and see if you can get an approved list of modems or at least ask what flavor of DSL they use. You can then try to match that up with whatever documentation you can find at westell.com.
