List of compatible wireless miniPCI cards - T40

#1 Post by plato » Sun Aug 15, 2004 7:09 am

Hi folks,

I am in the process of sourcing a wireless miniPCI card for my T40 here in Australia. I understand that the Intel 2200 non/IBM version is not an option. Does this also apply for the Intel 2100?

I have come across a card which would be ideal if I knew it actually worked. I guess I will e-mail the store, however I doubt they will know.

Your feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

It seems you can hack the CMOS to accept non-IBM cards.

I suspect this may void my warranty.

Is there a way to backup my original bios?

I'm speaking from personal experience, don't install the 2200bg card. i purchased mine from IBM direct from the "upgrades for my thinkpad" link and I had a horrible time. the connection dropped, and i needed to reboot my notebookfor it reconnect. i just recently (a few weeks back) replaced the original wifi card that came with my notebook and ran the recovery and have had no problems since.

I will be purchasing a 2200 NON-IBM card. Others seem to using them in T40s fine(after running the a mod).

I cant afford a genuine IBM card. The next best thing is buying the equivalent card and making a small reverseable mod to my machine.

I like the atheros based IBM a/b/g or IBM b/g card better than the Intel one, actually. Intel card does sip power better, atheros based card can pull over longer distances.

Note that IBM recently revised the drivers for all wireless adapters, plus revised Access Connections...the best way to configure the cards.

The Intel 2100B adapter will work...but I can't say it will if not a 2100B from IBM. FCC in the US makes IBM put restrictions on what the BIOS will and won't accept. A "generic" from Intel 2100B may not work (probably won't, in fact).

Use the 30MB access connections package to properly update and configure your system, regardless of what IBM Mini PCI adapter you use. You can download it here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4ZLNJB

Very good explaination of how IBM BIOS validates miniPCI cards here

Yes, will void warranty.

Look 1/3 way down the page for a utility to backup BOIS named phlash16.exe and winphlash.exe
