New HDD Question
New HDD Question
I ordered a new HDD yesterday (Hitachi 5k100) and was wondering if there was any reason to reinstall WinXP from the recovery media I made when I got my notebook, or if a clone of my current HDD would be fine. What I'm wondering is if reinstalling WinXP would give me better performance, like a reformat after receiving a new notebook. I do use most of the IBM/Lenovo software that is on my notebook, so it's not really bloatware to me. Any thoughts?

No reason whatsoever to reinstall Windows XP simply because you are changing the hard drive. Clone the old drive onto the new drive (resizing partitions, if desired and if applicable) and replace the old drive with the new.
The considerations of whether or not to start with a "clean" system so that the system is free of "cobwebs" are the same regardless of changing drives, i.e., if you have to clean/fix items on your computer, you need to do so whether or not you are chaning the hard drive.

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=27721 will tell you all you need to know about cloning your new HDD. I just did it a couple of days ago, but used a trial version of Paragon Drive Backup 8 because a couple of different versions of the Acronis TrueImage trial didn't work for me.

Oh, what I meant was installing WinXP on the new HDD from the recovery CDs, not reinstalling XP on my old HDD. Fresh XP install on the new HDD and then reinstall whatever software I had. Thoughts?
Thanks for the replies.

Fresh install is better if you have the time to spend reinstalling all the drivers, most of the time i go that way.r1ckchard wrote:Oh, what I meant was installing WinXP on the new HDD from the recovery CDs, not reinstalling XP on my old HDD. I'd seen that you mentioned cloning as an option in your OP, so that's why I threw you the linkr1ckchard wrote:Oh, what I meant was installing WinXP on the new HDD from the recovery CDs, not reinstalling XP on my old HDD. Re: New HDD Question
Why not get a HDD adapter for ultrabay slim? You can keep your old HDD and system while increase the storage space by integrating the new HDD into your laptop.r1ckchard wrote:I ordered a new HDD yesterday (Hitachi 5k100) and was wondering if there was any reason to reinstall WinXP from the recovery media I made when I got my notebook, or if a clone of my current HDD would be fine.
