Test for Ethernet card on G40?

#1 Post by Kerrith » Wed Aug 09, 2006 4:37 am

Friend's ThinkPad G40:

I was able to surf by plugging my DSL Ethernet cable into the ThinkPad G40's Ethernet port.

Then I added 512 RAM to the original 128, and, reformatted the HDD, and, did a clean install of XP Home w/SP2. The notebook works much faster than before. *

Now my Verizon DSL install CD says that it can't find the Ethernet [NIC] card/controller.

There are yellow question marks in Device Manager > Other devices > alongside Ethernet Controller, MultiMedia Audio Controller, and PCI Modem.

Does this mean the Ethernet card broke or what?

Thanks,

Kerry

Since posting the above I tried connecting via dial-up but discovered that the modem is "unavailable" "device missing" also. I assumed that if the machine has a line-in port that it had a modem card. I'm reluctant to open the back to see if the modem and Ethernet cards are there. Are there schematics or instuctions that tell how to check?

I'm confused as to what happen to the Ethernet NIC card between the time I surfed successfully and then made tha above changes. What could I have done to cause the Ethernet card to disappear.

No you didn't blow up your Ethernet card.

Download drivers for your Ethernet controller, the audio subsystem and the PCI modem from the link above.

>> I'm confused as to what happened...

Windows XP does not come with the drivers you need.

You *may* want to install the video driver from the IBM site as well...

Good luck!
